Subject: Aegis + Cover. Which save?

Let's say a model is obscured from a firer's LoS by an Aegis Defense Line (4+ cover save) and an intervening model/unit (5+ cover save) which save do I get to make in the following situations:
1. Not obscured 25% by either object alone, but together equals the required 25%. 4+ save or 5+?
2. Obscured say 15% by the aegis but 25% by the intervening model/unit. Both contribute to the models obscurity but am I required to take the save of the greater obscuration?

My take on this would be;
25% of the target is in *cover* (not intervening models), save is granted.
Only 15% in cover of the ADL (or other cover), no cover save granted.
Intervening models, 5+ cover save granted (fluff = not in cover but you are trying to shoot through the intervening target to hit another target, making it more difficult, thus a "cover save" ie : difficult shot).
I don't think you would mix and match cover + intervening models AFAIK.

I would pick the lesser save in both instances.

25% of unit in cover is not the rules anymore,
its 25% of the model the wound is allocated to ust be in cover,
look at the focus fire section , it has an example where the unit has multiple cover saves due to different models being in different cover

Who said anything about units? All I see is "model" ..
In any case, if the model is 25% obscured it has cover. I don't think (personally) that intervening models count towards that for anything other than a 5+ intervening models "cover" save (ie : you don't get a 4+ save for having 10% obscured by terrain + 15% obscured by "intervening models" .. you just get a 5+ for the intervening models).
In either of the 2 examples the OP put forward I would personally only take a 5+ because my model was not 25% or more obscured by cover.

If you have 2 different saves, you take the best one.

In both scenarios, the model is not at least 25% obscured by something which offers 4+ cover. Therefore it does not qualify for 4+ cover. It IS obscured at least 25% by two things which each offer at least 5+ cover. Therefore it does qualify for a 5+ cover save.
If the model were 25% covered by EACH, then it would be required to use the better save.

Generally, the way we do it is if there is doubt on which save to take, take the better save. This keeps arguments to a minimum while maximizing fun. Strangely enough we would take the lesser of the two saves....for the exact same reasons.

And you would be breaking the rules, which say you MUST take the best save avaliable.

His point is that if the saves are in question (ie a 4+ might not be available) he takes the weaker save so he doesn't "cheat" his opponent.

Right. If it's not clear that the model qualifies for the better save, you discuss and agree with your opponent or 4+ it.
