Man first torment and now this

Sure is blast from the past here

The Ultima series sure were a long time ago

Though I found their "credential" image a bit....much. Some games there arent really worth bragging about (like Dark Void and Barbies Riding Club ). They should hve just stick with the good stuff like Ultima, Wing Commander, System Shock, etc

Looks like another run of the mill fantasy setting. What is it going to do to stand out against the competition?

A lot of it is Garriott's name attached to it. Origin did a lot of good work back in the day, and I still fondly remember Ultima 7 as one of my favorite games. Ever.

The Ultima games had a good blend of being a quirky fantasy setting mixed in with just a few oddities beyond (like for example, the Avatar being from modern day Earth) that put it in a league of it's own.

I hope to be able to bake bread on my flying carpet while having a conversation with Marie Curie about what it was like living on Mars. Anything less than this and I will be disappointed.

Back in the English morass

I have never been a fan of Ultima and this isn't going to be changing my mind.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

I thought this was gonna flop. Richard Garriot doesn't exactly have the great rep of some of the bona-fide legends that do kickstarters. I mean he happily ruined the ultima series with 9 and to a lesser extent 8. Also, arguably, Warren Spector and the other looking glass guys that joined Ion Storm in the 90's were the real geniuses behind the ultima series. Oh also Tabula Rasa was pure pish.

Did anyone else think his rat tails (two tiny, tiny pony tails) were just fantastic?

I'll be honest, Garriot has always struck me as a bit of weirdo.

I still blame EA for the excuse they called Ultimas 8 and 9. Warren Spector was obviously a lot of the talent, as evident by all the awesome that was in Deus Ex.

And I actually liked Tabula Rasa :(

I never played it, i watched/read a few reviews etc and it looked pretty rubbish, not to mention the fact it had one of those, almost always disastrous, complete overhauls midway through development. The only game i know of that managed to scrape through such a revamp was Borderlands. Who knows maybe there were some great mechanics buried in there somewhere, iirc it had a novel approach to 'magic', something to do with words of power or somesuch?
