Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

Well, to start, Dust: Tactics is played on boardgame tiles, and is basically a boardgame with (sweet!) miniatures. It's very lightweight and fast moving. Dust: Warfare is played on tables like a regular wargame, has special army creation rules, and has much more depth. It doesn't move as quickly as Tactics, but it's just as fun. Personally, I play both. If I'm in the mood for a quick, simple, and brutal game I play Tactics. If I'm in the mood for something "heavier", I plat Warfare.
One thing that ties both the games together is the fact that all of the players will be engaged at the same time, thanks to the lovely action/reaction mechanics. That way, there is no sitting around waiting for your opponent to finish moving his troops...and casting spells...and shooting. Less downtime, more thinking on your feet.

If you want even more info, join the Facebook Dust group. There are tons of Dust super-fans on there that are more than happy to help out someone interested in the game. Linkage > https://www.facebook.com/groups/303941853917/

thank space.

any thoughts on whether or not a 9 year old could grasp the basic concepts?
id like to push some little guys around with my son and am getting tired of assembling GW miniatures.

is tactics like a trimmed down version of warfare or are they completely different? is tactics a good entry point into warfare?

Dust tactics or warfare would be fine for a 9 Y/O.

The starter box is for tactics, which is played on tiles, like a board game. Warfare is played on a table like 40k, and is probably what you are looking for if you were into GW games.

Well, the army creation rules are in the core rulebook, but there's also an extremely excellent online army builder > http://dust.mainecoon.net/

My 8 year old daughter picked up the rules pretty quickly for Dust:Tactics.
