Ok, came across this yesterday at a tourney:

Do you have to take a upgrade to the defense line, i.e. comm relay, quad gun or lascannon? Or can you just pay the 50 points for the wall and leave it at that.

The toruney judge said that it must have a upgrade. He was cool and let me do it anyway, but I have not heard/come across this issues before.

What is the general consenus?

There is nothing in the rules forcing you to upgrade the line hence all the upgrades coming under the sub-heading 'options' judge was wrong.

It says you 'may' add the comms relay, quad or Icarus. Pretty worrying if a tourney judge didnt know this. You can of course just pay the 50pts for the walls.

As above. It says you "may" take an upgrade. It's an option.

I don't know that I would continue playing tournaments at a place where the judges are this easily wrong...

This thing is a clear cut at is it can be. "You *may* take one of the following *options.*"
