I've got a vacation coming up and I'm interested in getting some paint
done. We will be flying around and stuff.

Typically I can paint 30-90 models during a stretch of at-home vacation.

Any advice for shlepping crap around?

I guess it depends on how you would be traveling. If via ground transport such as a car, bus, etc., find a small to midsize tool box that fits the basic tools you will need, your desired paints, and possibly a model or two. I personally have a slightly larger tool box that has a top tray that nicely holds all of my paints and brushes and a smattering of tools while the bottom part of the box holds a selection of plastic stock, space for models, larger tools, etc. I cannot comment on air travel as I tend not to travel in that way, though you may have issues taking your paints on the plane due to liquids restrictions for carry on and non pressurized cargo areas resulting in a big mess for you.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

You should check with either the airline and their rules for luggage, or TSA and their rules and regulations. I'm pretty sure you would have to check your box, since it will have tools in it, and like commissarbob said, not sure the paints will make it in the cargo hold.

I've never traveled like that, but would be interested in finding out if someone has tried it.

I took my Malifaux Battlfoam case with me on a cruise (for painting in the evening). We flew from Ohio to Orlando. The case went with me as my carry-on, and it threw up some weird looks from various TSA agents, but it didn't break any TSA rules. I was just asked if that was, "some Harry Potter stuff" at the port authority. Also prepare to have it go back and forth through the x-ray machines at least twice as the guy running the machine tries to get a good look at what you're carrying.

As for paints and tools, there is pretty much no restriction on liquid limit for checked bags (since you could bring up to like 4 litres of booze back with you), so I took my paints, and put them into 2 ziploc bags in case of spillage, and put the tools in another bag. That bag was checked and was with the rest of my luggage.

Edit: The liquids limit is for liquids that are being stored in your carry-on

paints do fine in the baggage compartment...
super glue does explode every once in a while...

i always fly with my paints...
it's never been a problem...
all the paints and supplies go in a tackle box, which fits in my pack...
knives, glue, and brushes go in the same box...
i just put the super glue in a baggie, in case it decides to pop...

my minis travel in a Sabol Army Transport, which fits in the overhead compartment...
i always carry it on, and have never had to check it...

i've seen how the baggage guys throw bags around...
we have people showing up in our village with dinged surfboards all the time, and now people are paying $200 for the privilege of a banged up board...
that's why the minis always stay with me...

cheers

I've painted, cut, glued and everything else in hotel rooms.
The only suggestion I would make is don't use their table if it is already covered in scratches.

The last one I stayed in had a light coloured table with a platic wood effect surface. If was scratched through to the chipboard beneath but had never been cleaned with a wet cloth. When the cleaner moved my stuff to wipe the table (I had kept it paint free - don't know why they did it) they did it with a muck wet cloth and it turned the whole top into a mucky criss-cross of scratches.
