Hello all!
I'm relatively new to Necrons and I'm not sure what I need next in my line-up. I've already got:
1x Necron lord w/ res orb
1x Necron Lord
52x Necron Warriors
5x Deathmarks
5x Immortals with Gauss Blasters
5x Immortals with Tesla
1x Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark
and of course the Necron Codex.
I'm looking for a very well-rounded army to have fun with. Any recommendations for what to purchase next? I've often thought about getting another Necron Battleforce, but I'm unsure if Fast Attack would be next or if I should aim more for heavy support.

You want :
6 wraiths.
5 more of each immortal.
2 Ghost Arks (at least).
5 (eventually) Barge kits. Eventually you want 2 CCB's and 3 Anni barges.
HQ:
Zhandrekh and Obyron
2 "Overlords." These can be anything "Royal."
Spyders and Scarabs.
Destroyer Lord
Fun stuff:
Doomsday Arks.
Tomb Blades
Ctan
Lycheguard
Stalkers
Imhotek
Destroyers
Wait on:
Flayed Ones
Triarch Praetorians
Monoliths (can be fun too)
You will need models to represent crypteks. I wouldn't buy that same model 10 times. You will need multiple Lords as well, but you get one with each Barge kit.

try out destroyers, they did get nerfed but I run two full squads no heavy with two destroyer lords and it works great lol.
Also I would try out some Doom Scythes... I only have one, but it still rocks!!!! Just regret not magnatizing the portal...

You don't even have to glue it on. Both the portal and the Death Ray both just "snap" right in and stay there without needing to magnetize or glue it.
To the OP - what is your goal for your army? What style? It is easy for us to give you a huge list of things you should buy - it's easy to do that with other peoples money.
There are only a few things I would say to pick up irregardless of what you are going to play...
- Night Scythes/Doom Scythes
- Annihilation Barges
For me those are the backbone of most of my armies along with a hell of a lot of Warriors and Immortals. Give us a hint as to what style you like to play.

I have quite a lot of necrons myself... before buying anything also take this in to concideration... what armies will you be facing most? Almost all my friends play Meqs... I have 2 vanilla opponents, a Space wolf player and a grey knight player... so a lot of good armour saves against me.. Then you have to think of the following,... what do i want? Flyer crazy goodness? Massive gauss/tesla gun lines? Or do you want 2/3 gunline with specialist hard hitting units... general tips,... always have a good core of warriors.. They are basic but reliable as long as they do not get into close combat with lets say terminators or any other well kitted out close combat squad.. Their gauss weapons are rapid fire, so twice as much shots when on halve range.. and gauss always glances regardless of armour value on a roll of a 6.. Always tak a lord with a ress orb with them.. realy,.. instead of a 1/3 chance of getting back up you can let em get back up 50% of the time.. this is huge! Annihalation barges,.. You can never go wrong with these guys... you might say they do not have many shots... but on lucky 6 you get 2 extra hits on initial target, and tesla can also hit other unegaged enemy squad withing 6'' of initial target.. When taking immortals, either tesla or gauss,.. take at least 10 per squad... and give em a lord with orb. IMO, when you go gauss.. take warriors.. cheaper and actualy just as effective.. And there are more ways of keeping these guys alive then immortals (arks) When facing lots of infantry go Tesla,... even against marines,.. gauss wont even penetrate them,, but tesla has a bit higher strentgh so wounds a bit more easily,, and yes its ap- but hey,.. marines can save almost anything so try to get off as many shots as you can,.. which tesla does perfectly.. When facing a lot of armour,.. try to get as many scarab squads as you can... they eat tanks for breakfast! just space em out real good to avoid blasts... but hey,.. they are lightning fast! When you need more lords and or crypteks... buy lychguard boxes instead... you can convert Crypteks and Lords out of them real easy... and when you need more ress orbs,.. just make em with green stuff This way you save a lot of money.. you can get 5 lords for the price of 1.5 resin lord. Also you get a lord with staff of light (easily convertable to warscythe) and a orb for ''free'' when you buy a comm/annihalation barge... Save money bro! Since you have a lot of warriors already id say start with a warrior based army... get about 3 lords with orbs extra.. you probably have scarabs lying around.. when facing tanks use them to fill up your fast attack slots. And make your ark a ghost ark, they work wonders with a warrior based army.. Play games with them and go from there... if you think i miss a hard punching unit go wraiths or destroyers depending on what enemies you face... If you want more speed in your army go wraiths destroyers and or annihalation barges... if you want even more staying power switch some warriors for immortals or get more ghost arks... Realy, before spending a lot of money, try out some games with what you have I have uploaded my converted Crypteks to my gallery,.. look for the blue metal staves guys ;P Use them as an example,.. or not if you dont like them

Whoa! Thank you Waaaghboss! That was an amazing suggestion on every count!
@Budikah: I wish I did know which kinds of styles I like to play. I'm going to take the Waaghboss' suggestion and play some games as to ascertain which style suits my personality best. It also might even help me feel for what kind of armies my opponents will field.

Woah woah woah, Triarch Praetorians are not even close to FO or Monolith standards. Stick a Destroyer Lord in them and they become prime Terminator hunters; Preferred Enemy on S5 AP2 assault weapons followed by a charge with S6 (+1 S included already) Power Axes? I can't think of much that can stand up to that. True, they're expensive, but when you consider that you're taking out entire squads of even TH/ SS terminators inside a turn or so, that cost becomes relatively justified. The DLord can take an Orb and MSS, and you've got a majority T5 squad that gets back up on a 4+; the only downside is the 3+ save.
They might not be as good as Wraiths with a DLord, but they're still far better than you're giving them credit for.
I'd also downgrade the CCB to 'fun', since 6th nerfed the sweep attack quite heavily (only being able to move 12" in the movement phase really hurts it; in about 7-8 games I've only ever been able to make 1 sweep attack) and the inclusion of WS1 for even vehicles that have moved flat out means that most enemies can simply pile on grenades that hit your CCB on 3s; anything with a meltabomb pretty much means your day is ruined if you were relying on that CCB.
They're fairly decent at sending a tough Overlord into your opponent's face early on, or for tying up the few units that can't really hurt it, but it's not as competative as it was back in 5th.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Sorry for the partial thread hijack, but can you guys give a suggestion for expanding a necron army from the Battleforce. I have been thinking about doing a primarily immortals necron army but I do not know where to start.

The Monolith dislike makes me sad. Mine has been performing well, and on that list I would definitely swap it with Lychguard.
Triarch Praetorians are pretty good, and I would say that you could run them instead of Wraiths if you wanted. However, running them both isn't necessary.
When it comes to troops, I suggest sticking with Tesla Carbines on your future Immortals. Both guns are excellent however so in the end it's your call.
Maintain a decent stable of Royal Courtiers, like 2 of each, and then get more if you feel that you need them (or if you just want them )
Arks, Spyders, Scarabs, Destroyers, Tomb Blades and Stalkers are good, but they aren't "core" as it were. If you decide to buy them, you won't be worse for it. The Monolith is on this list too, I guess... One day it'll be redeemed!
For must-buys, I recommend 1-2 Scythes and at least 2 Barges. You'll get more mileage out of Annihilation Barges than CCBs, and both Scythe variants are good.
The only things you should avoid are C'tan Shards and Flayed Ones. Shards can be okay, but FO are pretty weedy for an Elite unit. Lychguard are hit-or-miss, and I suggest proxying them before making a decision.

I have recently started Necrons too and the tips here are very good.
One unit people seem to have forgotten about though is the humble Deathmark + Veiltek + Night Scythe. These are sort of a one trick pony BUT if you need something removing from an objective they WILL do it. You could still do with Immortals in a Night Scythe to capture the backfield objective after but it is one of the best ways to clear and capture something. I enjoy using them anyway ^_^
I've had mixed results with Triarchs but I think this is because I only have 5 at the moment. I've used them with Destroyer Lord (worked VERY well) and on their own. When used on their own I would be very selective over where I deepstrike or footslog them too. They are good against CC units that don't spit out much firepower but I would advise against charging shooty squads as their numbers are low. I want to try 7-8 guys as I reckon this would be the sweet spot. A very fun unit and they look badass.
Scarabs - I know they got nerfed badly but I don't think I have a unit more feared than the Scarab. They are simply awesome. Again just be careful who you charge them into. I mistakenly charged a Dreadnought thinking I could eat it for breakfast...bad idea. I did manage to get it down to AV11 but the double strength hits just Instant Death'd me. They are however brilliant at holding up Marines and anything short of dedicated CC units. Last night I held up a bike squad, wiped some out AND held up a half combat squad who came to help out. I run a squad of 7 and spawn bases with my Spyder. Brilliant units :-D
Anni Barge - you MUST take these. If luck is smiling you will get at least one 6 a turn. I got FOUR in one round of shooting last game. Brutal. I have been running two in the last 4 games and I have only lost one, once. Very tough, very shooty, very good :-)

Happygrunt wrote:Sorry for the partial thread hijack, but can you guys give a suggestion for expanding a necron army from the Battleforce. I have been thinking about doing a primarily immortals necron army but I do not know where to start. Well, ill try, the thing is, when going for a heavily immortal army is, you will get less models then you can with warriors. If you go gauss,... seriously take warriors,.. they perform just as well and you can get more models and thus more shots off.. Now,.. the only reason i ever take immortals,.. tesla.. when you face off against hordes of orks/nids and even MEQ armies, they can work wonders... SM can save almost anything,.. so ap doesnt matter. Perfect! bit higher strength shots that can generate more hits And you can never have enough shots against horde armies... Thing is,.. if you go immortal,.. you are practicly throwing away the ghost ark... it can only ress warriors. So only the ress orb from lords can boost your survivability... Now, if you go immortals, it aint that bad,, they are a bit tougher to kill, and only a bit more expensive.. So place them well and hope the dice roll in your favour.. Depending on what armies you will be facing you need to expand.. Wraiths are good against any army as well as annihalation barges. Get at least a unit of 6 wraiths and give about 2/3 of em some whip coils.. If you buy an annihalation barge you also get a necron lord and a base with it. Build it with a staff off light/warscythe if you have it and a ress orb. Dont buy any resin lords unless you realy like the model.. save some money. I very much like Lychguard,.. but dont use them below 1250 or 1500, they are expensive to use.. And they must fit your play style or they are useless. Getting more warriors/scarabs is also a very good idea. Scarabs are ridiculously fast and tear vehicles apart real quick. While warriors are always a stable choice IMO. Getting a box of Lychguard and converting them to Crypteks ( use the deathmark heads from the immortal sprue for pure awesomeness) is also a good idea.. Crypteks can realy boos your army in a way no other unit can. Read the rules though, you can easily make a mistake when choosing the wargear like taking a unique gear twice,.. which isnt allowed. Deathmarks are also very nice,.. high toughness creature on the other end of the table? These guys will bring it down. Get 5/10 of these guys depending on how much MC etc you face... Personally i like destroyers, they can kill MEQ relatively easy, you just have to get the SM out in the open,... which happens a lot cause a lot of marine players never have to use cover since ap3 doesnt come along often.. A Heavy destroyer or 2 can pop tanks and high toughness with relative ease.. LORD WITH ORBS!! These guys MUST be in your army,.. i dont care what main weapon you give them as long as they take a ress orb,.. they make your 5+ Reanimation protocols to a 4+... which means,.. 50% chance of getting back up when ''killed'' Now that is just awesome!!... Well, this compared with the other advices in this thread should be enough info?

Don't get me wrong, I love Destroyers and Monoliths, but if you are building an army and want the most bang for your buck I would but the barges, arks, wraiths, and fliers first.
Praetorians are neat, but in almost all cases wraiths are better, especially with a D.Lord. Again, if you are loaded, get both.
Gauss vs tesla comes down to what your opponent has as far as what is good. If they run alot of mech warriors in arks can glance about anything to death on a single turn no problem. If you are facing orc hordes or nids gauss has diminishing returns (although the ap is nice on lighly armored units. I like to take lots of gauss in arks vs mech lists as opposed to scarabs (although they chew anything up armor wise, but they can't score and they have to get there. Plus they get doubled out by a strong breeze).
Barges are insanely good. They just are. CCB's rock against monsterous creatures, too, despite nerfs to sweeping strike range.
My favorite new unit, though, is the Ghost Ark. They usually drop below wraiths and barges in target priority. They have 4 HP. You can shoot at 3 different targets, or pour 15 regular or 30 rapid fire (shooting of one bank). Or, load em with str 8 ap2 Crypteks. AND they regen your warriors. AND they are living metal. AND they count as assault vehicles since they are open topped. AND the are skimmers. AND they are only 100pts. Brilliant.
