Finally. I've stayed up until near 3am getting this done and finished as I was so close to complete I could taste it. So I've sacrificed a lot of sleep to get this project done. It was a lot of fun, hard at a few points, and there were some colossal messups here and there but I powered through them. I thought I'd post it here first, get some feedback (followed by some sleep).

The entire squad (will typically be broken up amongst other squads as center piece models):

Banner Bearer with magnetized Deathwing banner (taken from the new Deathwing command squad box):

Banner Bearer's damaged shoulderpad -- This one is my fault. During cleanup and prep I started going waaaaay too fast with flush cutter and tore a chunk out. I had no spares, so... I decided to try some battle damage. This is my first attempt at using weathering powders (took some soot colored powder on q-tip and mashed it into the broken area, then highlighted the metal with P3 Pig Iron.

Plasticard Storm Shields:

Additional TH/SS terminator:

The Lightning Claw twins:

It was a lot of work, a lot of fun, and I definitely learned a lot about modeling and painting in going from the original one I started on to the final product. Sitting here on the desk next to me I think they look pretty good. I will definitely be looking at reducing the number of layers needed in the armor in future Deathwing models. It took a loooooooong time. Doing four of them in assembly line took about 15 hours. That's waaaaay too long. I did reduce the amount of time necessary to do the bases down to about 10-15 minutes each.

The banner is one of the things I'm most proud of. Surprisingly, that's my very first attempt at a fire effect.

Lovely natural colours. I can really see that you have painted them in quite a few layers. Great work!

Disagree about a white background for these models. I think black lets them stand out more.

As for the models, the bone colour is excellent. How did you get that? I would like to see slightly darker recesses across the board, would be my only comment. I could not do them as well as that though, so feel free to ignore me!

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I wanted my Deathwing armor to be a bit more white than the studio scheme while still keeping the 'bleached bone' flavor. It's simple, if tedious. I used P3 paints for the armor so I'll be using those colors when explaining. The models were primered black using DupliColour Sandable Black Primer --

1) All paint thinned 2 parts paint, 1 part mixing medium, 1 part water (so it's very thin, more like colored water).
2) Base with 'Jack Bone over the primer until you have a smooth coat (took me about 5-6 layers).
3) Layer over with a 1:1 'Jack Bone:Menoth White Base mix, painting towards the edges of armor plates (about 2-3 coates - use your best visual judgment).
3) Another layer, this time pure Menoth White Base.
4) Another layer, this time 1:1 Menoth White Base:Menoth White Highlight - also start picking out edges with highlights
5) Another layer, this time pure Menoth White Highlight - hit all raised edges with highlights
6) Shadowing - go back over darker areas of the model (which were left 'Jack Bone) with a 1:1 'Jack Bone:Bastion Gray mix. Darken by adding more gray to taste. This includes the back of shields, the plates facing the shields, bottom of rims of legs and under the power generator.
7) Highlighting - mix a 1:1 of Menoth White Highlight and Morrow White (pure white) and go over the raised edges on the bright places of your model (whatever is facing your imaginary light source)

Voila - Deathwing bone armor.

Very nice work there. My only minor gripe is that the back of the Storm Shields look a little plain. Maybe some scrolls would break up the flat areas.

A noble effort with the storm shields, but you can still tell they're plasticard since they lack the hyper detail of the minis.

Lovely bone colour you have their. I have those same bases on my current DA army I'm building, really happy with them and they look great on yours!

The bases are presculpted from an eBay shop called Fantascape. They've got some pretty nice choices there. From there it was a matter of painting, weathering lightly, then adding some flock.

Thanks!

The armor and trimming are meant to point to classic Deathwing colors while I wanted the power weapons to really stand out and show as being something different/dangerous.

Is it the coloration or the scripting itself that you feel is off?
