well getting back into pc gaming and well would like a new mmo to play. Here is a small list of some games i played and my thoughts.
SWTOR - WoW in space with voice acting (I hate the F2P model they are going with)
WoW - Stopped playing in BC
Tera - not really my style and dont like it a whole lot.
GW2 - they took away my healer..nuff said.
FFXI - 99 in 4 jobs = done to me
FFXIV - waiting for ARR to launch to give it another go!
Eve - Space mining at its finest!
I love a game where there is a good player base of people who want to *gasp* enjoy a game together!

Have you tried everquest? That being said you'd probably not like it if you didn't like WOW, but its basically WOW without the people trying to kill you. PVE primarily except on the one PVP server. People will group readily with you and its loads of fun.

EQ1 is probably better as a party game, even has party dependant mobs in the tutorial level.
The graphics are a little shoddy as a result of the age. But COME ON, this game spawned WOW and all modern MMORPGs, The only other MMORPG that was earlier was Ultima online....and that was a different universe dude AND the servers aren't up at all.

I used to enjoy Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine. But that may be because I am a fan of the series in general. It is very... grindy.

Runescape.
Runescape may be one of the best games ever. You're not bound to one class either, wich is nice.
Now, I'm off to chop some trees and make fires of them.

Ugh, even Ragnarok was more enjoyable then Runescape. XD
That said, I played Ragnarok for years... purely for the community. The game is a giant grindfest.

LOTRO is getting a bit old now, but it's very fleshed out, and fairly solo-friendly.
Most classes can take more than 1 role, so grouping is easy.
And, who wouldn't want to play a Hobbit who shouts at Orcs to make them run away, and sings to heal you?

It's a charming grindfest, at minimum. The character design, music and monsters (at least before everything was a half-naked loli) just did a very good job projecting the feel of the world. Maybe it was the relatively limited communication tools in the game, and the way the economy kind of forced you to interact with other players but prontera always managed to feel more "Homey" than any big hub in any mmo I've played.
The servers were relatively small and naturally forced players into specific parts of the game world without crowding you around 1-2 specific NPCs. When I was running my forger smith I could even get a sense of what trades other people were doing and how resources & money were moving through the server as a whole. A lot of games are so big and so centred around these super concentrated NPC interfaces (see the AH in Ironforge and WoW) you just wind up immersed in this sea of players and never actually have to interact with anyone.
Then again it might just be nostalgia talking.

Oh I agree, prontera is still the best MMO hub city I've evere experienced. And imo, one of the best PVP modes ever, war of emperium was fun And yeah, the game had a proper economy with prices for items fluctuating based on how often they were dropping, how many people were hunting for them (abyssal knight cards anyone?) and whoever was being a dick and underselling them for 5mil less then the rest to screw everyone over.
It's free these days too because the private servers often have double the content.

Just a little update on everquest at the moment.
Its the anniverary, so that means new quests, new epic items and more XP for everyone.
They've also made a LOT of stuff free. So you can run ANY class and race for free, all three bank vaults are open as are the shared bank slots and there's a lot more besides.
