so.. i wanted to take faramir and his rangers as a group.. then i noticed all his rangers automatically come with bows..

so my guess is, it is impossible to build a total ranger group? since they all have bows, and there is a 3:1 ratio limit?

if there is a way, (besides the obvious of adding other non bowmen figures) please let me know, thanks!!

Just indicate to your opponent which rangers have bows and which dont. Mark the bases or something like that.

I think you missed the point. He's saying that by the rules all rangers have bows, not that the only models available have bows.

For a Gondor list, there's the bow limit. For an Arnor list, however, there's no such qualms, so why don't you make a generic Arnor list with Faramir as an allied hero?

What I was saying is that you can run a total ranger army but some dont have bows it the same with rohan cavalry they all come with bows so does that mean I cannot run a warband of them the answer being NO I just state or indicate which have bows. All this means is they get free bows but they can only take a few.

And is there an option not to take the bows if the rules say they're equipped with them?

I believe GW faq'd that if you take only models that automatically come with bows that only those actually holding them in their hands can use them.

A full Rider of Rohan army has the same problem.

It really is a stupid rule as it screws certain themes, but it makes sense from a balance perspective. Even at only str2, an army of just bows can really dominate.

Got a source for that FAQ? Its not on GWs website as far as I can tell nor is it a rule in The Hobbit SBG hardcover rulebook.

Its been so long, it may actually be gone. Last I saw it was like 8 years ago. before the stupid Warband rules or the Hobbit update.

Which means its no longer valid, and any mention of it that I found online applied to the Legions of Middle-earth book and even then only for the Riders of Rohan and not the Rangers of Gondor as the OP asked.

well either way, they need to remedy this somehow. i didnt want to take a boat load of something else just so i could take faramir and his bowmen. grrr! i dont see the point anyway, make all non hero bowman less of a hand to hand threat and go from there. that or make sure there is plenty of scenery on the board so its not just a big shooting match. either way, back to the drawing board. i guess ill just have to make some other all spear/sword and shield guys and make faramir like a guerrilla force w/ his rangers.

thanks for all the help guys.

So you're not going to ally Arnorians?

But anyway, with my Arnor led by Strider army, once the rangers get into combat, they're screwed.

If you actually wanted an all-ranger force, run arnor rangers (literally the same) with one dunedain per 4 regulars, then faramir as a lone ally. That way, everyone is a ranger, all equipped with bows.

I know I am late to the party here, but also keep in mind that Dunedian and RotN cannot lead warbands and are solos. You still need to run Halbarad, Aragorn, or a generic Arnor captain(mind you it's cheesy since timeline they didn't exist) to be legal. That's a lot of extra points taking away for you to then get Faramir in the force also.
