What is The Empire has that lets them take Leadership tests on 3D6, and how can I remove it?

Dark Eldar could potentially enslave the galaxy.
Necrons could potentially destroy everything.
Chaos could potentially slaughter everyone.
Tyranids could potentially eat everyone.
Tau could potentially raise prices on import good from the Eastern Fringe. |

It's called Hold the Line. It's a special rule for Empire Generals and Captains (so not Warrior Priests, Arch Lectors, Wizards or Templar Grand Masters), and given to units only in combat (so panic tests and the like don't benefit).
You get rid of it by killing the character with the rule. This isn't that hard, as he's just a T4 guy with 2 or 3 wounds. And often he'll be the BSB, so you should already be targeting him.
That said, most Empire players know how important this guy, and the other Empire characters are to making there troops effective. And so they will have splashed out on defensive gear, and have chumps that can accept challenges in place of their more valuable characters (in fact, the Captain is an expendable casualty for most Empire players if it keeps their Warrior Priest alive).

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something. |

Thanks. I didn't know it's only in combat. Makes things even better.

bear in mind, it can be passed over to detachment units too, so even ifthe character isnt in the detachment, they can get the bonus.
as another 'aside' it ONLY works when the captain is in a unit, so a solo guy, or a Pegastain or a Grifferal dont get the benefit...

What are detachments? I don't know the Empire book, just a few of the big things in it that I worry about (cannon trashing my Daemon Prince for one).

They can buy a small unit to accompany a big unit. The small unit gets certain special rules that its parent unit has and it can do some special things if its parent unit does something.

So ambiguous that I had to exalt!
Essentially what he said is true. Detachment is half or less than parent unit. It cannot take command. But allows charge reactions like stand and shoot or counter charge if you charge the parent unit. Flee reactions of detachments don't cause panic. And if they are within 6 inches 7 special rules that the parent unit has can transfer over to the detachment. All Prayers also transfers over.

Its 3", and they do now cause panic...

Sorry Haven't played empire much since the new book. Still converting them, so it takes time. Played the old book a bit more often so I'm getting confused a little bit on them too.

oh it certainly does take time...
its moreof a double edged sword now, as the 3" + panic can be a bad thing, offset by the "we share all rules" now...

Don't worry about all those finicky, overly complicated rules. You'll usually kill everyone anyways, they're just puny humans. Only thing impressive there is the codpieces.

Okay, so they share some rules and I think I read they share their spells? If I cast a hex on the main unit, does that apply to the detachment or is it only their specific spells?

I don't think so. Only if the spell gives one of the special rules or effects mentioned as being shared will they get the same effect. So if I cast a spell that gave Stubborn to the parent unit the detachment would benifit. But if I gave them +1 strength from a spell the effect would not effect the detachment.
I could be wrong, but I think thats how it works.

@GT, you aint wrong. in the empire book there is a very specific list of what affects both parent and detachment:
stubborn
steadfast
frenzy
hatred
hold the line
immune to psychology
stupidity
any warrior priest spells
also, these only work in 'close support', ie 3" away or less...
