The planet Centauri IV was a mess, even by imperial standard, as Librarian Trajanus and Captain Xiphos stood over a tactical display streaming real-time battlefield data to the tacticum, the whole room’s lights dim, except for the green glow of the display. Imperial guard forces were in danger of having the supply lines cut, as they passed through a strategic valley, with only two entrances. They had requested repeatedly and urgently for aid in holding the position, their forces poorly positioned to redeploy to the area.

“The Humans ought to be able to handle this situation themselves if they harness their faith.” Growled a clearly annoyed Xiphos.
“My lord, given the recent turn of events of the sector, several rebellions, I believe a greater plot to be in motion. Could this not be a sign of greater things to come? The tarot has decreed an uncertain course.”

“Our forces could be much more wisely utilized in a direct action, opening up the city to guard's advance, not this defensive drudgery Trajanus. We were meant for the heat of war, not the solitude of guard duty of supply routes.”

“We are the Emperor’s finest, we must fight wherever we are most needed, to persecute the enemies of him on the throne.”
“Very well, lead the action and hold that line, meanwhile, I will take a contingent and storm the trenches entering the city, clearing the way for the Guard to do their job.”

Trajanus nodded as the Captain left the room, his cloak trailing behind him. He had the hot blood of the righteous, but the calculating nature of a leader. Together they were a formidable force, when they worked in unison.

However he was most grateful for the ability to lead the holding action, he felt a familiar psychic presence, one he had not felt for days, since the Ghost incident on Victus II. He would be glad to solve this mystery, should the answers present themselves down on the surface.

In short order, the Strike Cruiser Mataris launched a Thunderhawk with the Captain aboard, and drop pods, containing Trajanus, his Sternguard retinue, as well as Venerable Brothers Silvius, and Argentum.

On the ground, Tank Commander Arcayus had managed to get his armored column rolling, coming to a head at one end of the valley, spreading and ordering Sergeant Cellus to deploy in combat squads to best utilize both the squad’s plasma cannon, and their flamer. Auspex was intermittent, and that worried him greatly. The valley had a penchant for a thick fog, and today was certainly the case. If his chronometer was correct, Trajanus would arrive shortly, and begin directing the action, he just had to hold until then.

Turn 1 Silver Lances
Brothers Silvius and Argentum land a short ways off, and Auspex goes wild with dozens of contacts, as the Venerable Brothers disembark, the squad feeds light up with dozens of images of the foe, Chaos Space Marines, marked in the sinister colors of the Ursine Claws, Space Wolves lost to Chaos.
“They’ll be overrun without assistance, brothers! Forward For the Emperor! Grind them under our treads! By bolter and blade!”

The Marines Move up, and tanks grind forward stirred to action by the order.
On the other side of the battlefield, the Venerable Brothers open fire on the Enemy Hellbrute and the enemy Rhino, not managing to destroy the foul creature of chaos, and only managing to slag a tread and immobilize a tread on the rhino.

The Silver Lance open up on the Cultists lurking in the fog holding the opposite end of the valley. A missile from the Infiltrated scouts under Sergeant Lairan manage to blast several from their cover, however the fog frustrates most of the fire.

The Thousand sons Rhino jets forward away from the Drednoughts, to the center of the valley, and pops smoke, while the hellbrute moves to engage with the obliterators, and the Khorne Berzerkers move out from their immobile vehicle.

The hellbrute misses Brother Argentum with its multi-melta, howling with rage in regards to the coming assault. The obliterators grin as they morph grotesque multi-meltas of their own, and all three fire at Argentum. By the grace of the Emperor, the fog prevents him from being hit, and he braces himself for the coming assault.

Havoc launchers spew death into the air, shots scattering wildly into the fog, landing feet away from Sergeant Cellus.
“Someone said their prayers this morning brothers! Forward fear nothing! We are fear incarnate!”
The enemy hellbrute and Brother Argentum swig mightly blows against one another, sowing destruction all around them, however the Hellbrute is clearly winning.

Turn 2
Trajanus was aware of the situation as he hit planet side, chaos marines had taken the field. Their twisted brothers had to be brought to heel.
“Brother Geralt! You know what to do!”
As the pod landed, the last vestiges of the fog were burned away, the Sternguard landing and combat squadding once more, their pod shielding them from the majority of the enemy army.

“Brother Arcayus, destroy this vile thing!” Yells Trajanus to the Tank Commander, whom has taken positions with dominating fields of fire.

Missile Launchers, plasma cannons, lascannons, autocannons and meltas fly into the cloud of smoke, managing to only wreck the accursed vehicle, its occupants piling out calmly into the terrain protecting them.
“First Blood to the Lances! Press our advantage!” Yells Veteran Sergeant Geralt
With what remaining firepower was left, several of the purposefully moving marines were brought down, however, the plasma combat squad and Trajanus do not have line of sight to unleash their plasma.

Brother Silvus shoots the Empty Rhino, blowing off its havoc launcher, and then charges it, a mighty explosion ripping into the Khorne Berzerkers, however their armor and insanity hold them together, and they take no casualties.

The Chaos marines ready their counter-attack, as the Obliterators ascend into a building, and morph assault cannons, and khorne berzerkers rush around the building to find skulls to offer their god.

The Cultist horde rushes to their leader, the Sorcerer, who begins summoning the power of the warp, cackling maniacally. The armor suits accompanying him all calmly level their bolters at Sergeant Cellus’ combat squad.

Assault cannons shriek down into the combi-plasma wielding Sternguard, as two go down, blown away by rending fire, the rest survive as their armor holds strong against the fusillade.
“Avenge your fallen brothers! Make them pay with their unclean lives!” Yells an infuriated Trajanus

The Chaos Sorceror levels his hands at Sergeant Cellus’ squad, and the lead marine simply explodes, another keels over in pain, however rises to fight, Just to be blown off his feet by a wave of psychic power, and an ungodly shriek.
The Thousand sons then fire into Sergeant Geralt’s melta-toting Sternguard, however, their link to reality seems weak, and with their depleted numbers, they manage to set 3 marines ablaze with their warp-fueled ammo.
The cultists unleash hell on Sergeant Cellus’s marines, killing the final marine, leaving only the Squad’s Flamer, and the Sergeant alive. He grits his teeth against the wall of bullets and shot pouring into his men, swearing vengeance.

Brother Argentum is bested by the Hellbrute, toppling over onto the ground, but not before landing a final blow, leaving the Hellbrute Completely stunned. Brother Silvius sees his opportunity.

Turn 3
Trajanus and his men circle the wrecked rhino, along with Sergeant Geralt’s men. They are joined by the remains of Sergeant Cellus’ squad, as they form a formidable firing line.

Arcayus orders his tanks to target the largest threat on the field, the obliterators.
Brother Silvius Charges behind the Hellbrute, unleashing his cleansing fire into its power supply, turning it into a large fireball.
“Vengeance is mine Scum! Be broken and Tremble in fear of the Righteous!”

Trajanus reaches deep into the warp, and creates zone of null energy on the Thousand Sons squad, their unnatural protections significantly weakened, the Sternguard open up with plasma and Vengeance bolts, wiping the squad and their vile leaders out of existence.
Sergeant Cellus targets the cultists, his holy flamer claiming several of their miserable lives, their cries of agony snuffed out by burning promethium.

Sergeant Lairan’s squad fires another salvo of sniper rounds into the Cultists, claiming two, however, the squad’s missile launcher malfunctions, and the frag missile flies wide, landing amid the remains of Sergeant Cellus’ squad. The Scout looked on in horror as the shot blasted the valiant flamer-wielding trooper from his feet, landing nearby, unmoving. The scout's guise is absolutely haunted. Sergeant Lairan sought words of encouragement and wisdom to impart in this instance, but could find none, hoping his brother on the field would move again, but fate decreed otherwise.

Arcayus’s tanks pounded the building holding the obliterators, a lascannon finding its mark kills one, however their armor and cover hold admirably, their position was strong, despite rocks falling and melting off the structure left and right from the fusillade.

A shriek overhead was heard as a contingent of Chaos Raptors dropped from the Sky, their armor reeking of blood and slaughter, and melta guns at the ready. They sought to land near Commander Arcayus’ tank, however, they scattered right in front of his tank, however, rather than panic, the experienced commander did the only thing he could do, gun the engine forward, ploughing into the landing marines, before they could get their footing, running the entire squad under-tread. (mishap death)
“Taste dirt and my treads fools, our holy armor is proof against you!”
Any survivors from the brutality immediately fled from the demoralizing scene following the tank's passing.

(At this point, my opponent conceded)

The Chaos marines remaining realized they had been out-maneuvered, and began making for the gap quickly as possible, running back towards the city. The Silver Lances began ensuring their foes had not escaped death on the field, and gathered their wounded.

Trajanus had called a meeting of minds at the scene of their firefight mid-field. The smoldering wreckage of traitors still hot around them.
“Well fought brothers, Arcayus, you have done well once again in holding the enemy for our primary strike, you are to be commended. Sergeant Cellus, your bravery does you credit, pray for your brothers, that they may be restored to you. Remember, the Codex states cover is wise.”
“Yes sir…” The Sergeant replied as levelly as he could manage, torn between relief at their victory, and the loss of his entire squad.

“Geralt, you and your men never cease to impress, it is an honor to fight by your side once more.”
“The honor is all mine my lord, any time. Glory to the 4th!” Responds the Sergeant, his features visibly pleased with his men and their victory. He had always been a rather cheerful man. Had to come with the territory of jumping head-first into death's clutches time and again.

“Brother Silvius!....Where is he?”
Sergeant Lairan pointed to the smoldering wreck of brother Argentum. Brother Silvius stood unmoving, and stoic over his brother's form, awaiting the attentions of the Techmarines.
“He will not leave his brother’s side. His devotion is an example to us all.”
Trajan made the sign of the Aquila, praying for Argentum’s recovery.

Over long range vox, Captain Xiphos chimed in.
“Contacts! Chaos Marines in the Trenches! Area Designated ZONE MORTALIS! Purge the Scum!! Xiphos out!”

Trajaus suddenly wished he had gone into the city instead, where the fighting was thickest. Rather than in this pock-marked, wreckage filled valley, but such was duty. The supply lines were secure.

Chapter 3 to come soon
