Hi guys, I was thinking about including a unit or 2 of Kommandos but looking at the price for just 5 it makes me drawn more towards convering a squad of boyz, as most of the stuff (such as weapons and bodies) are included in the box, what I'm having trouble with is finding backpacks and possibly heads to make them stand out as Kommandos, does anyone knkw or have any pics on how to make a decent Kommando conversion? I'd be most greatful for any tips.

Cheers

For a slightly more serious take the Burnas/Lootas box provides a wealth of parts for conversion into Kommandos.

About half the models in this unit are converted in such a way.

All you really need to distinguish a BOY from a KOMMANDO IMHO is a backpack.

Put this on an AOBR boy, and you are done:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kromlech-OW2-Large-Backpacks-Orc-War-2-ork-post-apo-/150590055065

Other things people do:
*Knives as the CCW held like a stabbing motion, you can usually swap the choppa around without much effort.
*Gasmask heads are 'in' for kommandos due to Snikrot
*Backpacks are big
*Camo scheme, even when not a Blood Axe army, even a Goff or Bad Moon army can paint some camo pattern which matches the primary color

Yeah, load them down with backpacks, water bottles, extra ammo etc, to suggest they have to spend significant time far from their supply lines.

And give them some sensible camo (or comedy camo as above), suggesting that by complete luck they've made themselves hard to see, unlike most Blood Axes who tragically misunderstand the camo concept.

Also consider extra scenic work on bases, with them hiding behind bits of walls, trees, etc.

Some ork-ified commando trappings would not go amiss. Necklace of ears, big combat knife in their teeth, some kind of 'sniper' shoota, humorous camo, or ridiculous supplies all would add to the effect you're looking for.

You just want bare bones? Take boys, give them the right equpment, then paint them in camo colors.

I am currently in the same process,..

got me a 2nd hand kommando upgrade sprue for €5 so thats a mega dea l But you dont get much out of it.

As someone said above, burna/loota sprue has some nice pieces for Kommandoz conversions. Those pictures above are just brilliant, but then playing on woodland terrain as much as i do,.. those do not fit the terrain. Something i myself find a big deal.

So i bought some bushes, plant stuff from a local store and am now in the process of making some orks coming out of bushes. I basicly bush the base up like crazy... and then let a head or an arm pop out And those arms will be painted with Orky kammo!

Forgeworld does kind of defeat my point about the price factor, which is the reason I wanted to convert my Kommandos, it'd probably be cheaper to get the Finecast ones if you have to buy the boyz and the conversion kits.

I am currently working on the same thing. I'm going to try and model some greenstuff back packs and bandanas for them.

The 'orks in red berets' concept is certainly worth considering - it does give a distinctive look for relatively little effort, and is fluffy _if_ you like the WW2 British commando analogy - but others dislike real-world analogies, coz hey, it's supposed to be the 41st Millennium after all

My first unit of kommandos (back when they could have the tankbusta bombs I modeled them with ) all had topknots, painted in bright greens to match the jungle foliage on their bases. as well as camo fatigues. All of them used knife-like choppas, rather than loud, smoky chain-choppas too.

"Hur, hur, hur. We looks like da' plants, see?"

If I had thought of it then, I should have painted their grenades to look like fruit.

The guns are from Kromlech from memory you get 2 1 brengun (using them as big shootas) 1 PIAT launcher and 4 sten guns plus 2 british frags.

I'm actually in the same process man. I've got 10 boys that are completely in excess and was wondering what the heck I was gonna do with them.

Some options for making them Kommandos:
1. Use only the knife / axe arm bits and convert the knifes so they're downwards (stabbing people)
2. Make them duel wield CC weapons, and have a pistol on the hip.
3. Make green stuff cloaks with hoods so you don't need to show a backpack
4. If you want backpacks, just use random other backpacks you have (IG communication backpacks, SM backpacks, IG fuel tank backpacks, Tau Firewarrior backpacks etc...) and just chalk it up to the Orks thinking they'll be clever and camoflauge.
5. When painting, do camo patterns and warpaint
6. Take all the bullet bits you have and attach them wherever they fit.
7. Only use the Boyz heads that dont' have helmets or hair, so then they'll look a lot more like Kommandos.

Not necessarily.

If you're willing to spread things out a bit more you can get 10 Kommandos using the bits rather than 5.
Doing something like 5 having backpacks and normal Ork heads and 5 with the Kommando heads but no backpacks and you get double the value from your set by simply spreading the bits out more.
Then of course you've got the Kommando Nob who has his own backpack, banner pole, head, and Big Choppa.
