So does anyone play this? Seen it on Steam for a while now and its looked intriguing, with excellent graphics. Just not sure what kind of game it is.
Looks like sim city, but is it also a RTS? I see you need to be online. Is it singleplayer, or competitive multiplayer?
Good game or pass?

Looking at it on Steam, it is actually cheaper to buy the game, and the complete DLC pack than it is to buy the complete or deluxe package edition.
I'm picking it up for my wife later in the day. It sounds too light on combat for my tastes, but she really enjoys those economic struggle games.

Its a city builder with (very) light RTS elements. The game is far more concerned with setting up stable, and quite complex, supply chains and keeping your population happy than it is with blowing stuff up.
The RTS elements consist of building a few turrets, a small navy and an even smaller airforce.
You don't need to be online but some elements of the game are locked out when you are offline. Games take a (very) long time, I think my current 'skirmish' game is about 7 hours old and I still haven't reached the top of the tech tree, so I doubt that there is any competative multiplayer, certainly not in the traditional sense.
If you like sim/city builder games its a good example of the genre and well worth buying.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Yea its far more about "Do you want to go industrial or green city" than "lets crush enemy factions!"
On the good side its very common during big steam sales for it to be on sale

Looks pretty engrossing, especially since you can get everything released this weekend for about 30 bucks.
I do love those city building games with lots of depth.

I wouldn't call it like SimCity. They're both building games, but Anno is more focused on logistics and supply. It's a lot less fuzzy than SimCity - where in SimCity you might be chasing a satisfaction number made up of a huge blob of factors, in Anno satisfaction is pretty binary, and it's more about ensuring you have the right things in the right places (and setting up supply chains when necessity demands things be localised).
It's an awesome game and super fun. The Anno games (they're a series) have a lot of heart and very similar concepts. Not really battle games - the combat is very simple, though sometimes important.

As an update, after a weekend of play my wife describes it as tremendously difficult, and impossible to shut off. The uplay was obtrusive and frustrated her initially, but once she made it past that the game was great.

Problem with Anno 2070 is that it just reminds me of how good Anno 1404 is. Engrossing gameplay, superb graphics, incredibly atmospheric and warm - those cities just feel real in a way that they don't in anno 2070.
Just take a look at these in-game graphics
And all of those surrounding buildings are functional, not just window dressing.

Anno 1404 is fantastic, too. Then again, it's very, very similar to Anno 2070. That's not necessarily a bad thing!

I honestly feel the scifi setting detract from this game, much prefer these in the old style.

To be honest I prefer 2070 to 1404, its basically the same game but more polished and with more to do.

It seems pretty sterile to me. The overly political nature of the factions just put me right off, and the research system I found very clunky and somewhat arbitrary.

The factions in 1404 were hardly deep and complex
Most of the research is pointless (aside from some of the first tier stuff) but like most of the rest of the game it provides little goals to aim for.

To be honest, I don't think Anno is all that great a series, it tries to present a lot of things as complex features where they kind of turn out to be nothing more then a grind. :\

It's fairly engrossing, and I've just got to part 3 of the 2nd chapter, I think. This level has taken maybe 5 hours so far.
It keep branching out, and adding more objectives.
There is a lot to keep track of, but does it quite well.
That said, the missions are quite predictable. You see a type of crop on an island, and later on, you'll be told to farm it to make something.
The games are lengthy, and there's little leeway on what you can do to achieve the objectives.
