I guarantee I'm not the first modeler to think of it, but has anyone ever tried staining or dying their models? It seems like it would be a great way to mass produce PA armies that need a basic coat or say red or blue, on the super cheap. We're talking 10 bucks to coat tons of models. Only hazard I see is you have to heat up the water with most dyes. What are your thoughts?

Wouldn't work with most fabric dyes.

To start with, the boiling water would warp the plastic (or *shudder* finecast).
Secondly, the dye probably won't hold very well due to the plastic.

Undercoat + dip would be a similar effect, though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

That was my only concern was the boiling water, but what if you weren't to boil it, just warm use warm water? And I would never attempt a such a feat with Finecrap, hell all the airpockets would probably cause the model to explode when heated(obviously over exaggerating). Most dyes designed for fabric, from my understanding state on the warning label that it stains plastic. I looked it up briefly on dying plastics, and it seemed to work pretty well given what he was doing, a plastic seat for a bike.

Think the only way to know is to try (Perhaps on a sprue first!) Some searches I can't find much information about dying plastic when its not hot, but some plastics can withhold the temp.

There is a thread about dying plastic on RCGroups forum

How well it would work with model plastic? No Idea.

It's my codex and I'll cry If I want to.
