Now that I've got my dark eldar kitted up and painted, I've decided I miss my boyz, but I know they are in good hands.
I want to start with 500pts, and work up.
I think it'll be a nice contrast to my dark eldar.
What should I buy first?

I play Orks and DE too, as well as Nurgle Daemons and DA
Depends on your playstyle. You'll definitely need some Boyz though..
I favour Mekbash (lots of kanz and dredds, lootas and burnas, big meks) because it appeals most to me, but it's not the most optimised army.
Really it depends on whether you are looking to just have fun or to win games, and what kind of army appeals. There are several good solid build options with Orks.
Have you considered allying Orks and DE. It works pretty well, even allowing for them having paranoid moments

If I were to ally them, I would want a footslogga army.
Haven't considered that one yet :p.
I want to run the orks alone at first though, so I'm thinking I want to run some trukks, with shoota boyz.
Or maybe choppa/slugga boyz? I like the assaultiness of orks.
I like quickness, so anything that'll get me into assault fast
But then I need something that can wreck tanks....
as most armies that I play against have 2+ vehicles... even at 500pts.
Rhinos and barges everywhere!

You could roll a biker list (but those get FREAKIN' expensive, especially bought new
Wazdakka, bikerboss, nob bikers or bikerboyz. a few buggies..
The nob bikers especially can wreck face in cc and kill tanks, and are very resilient.
The bikerboss and Wazzy leading regular bikers can make a dent too..
Slugga/choppa boyz are cool, but most folks will tell you that shootaboyz are better this edition. I use both
If you run trukkspam you'll need a fair few trukks. One or two will die fast, multiples not so much. Putting Meganobz in them (3 strong) is potent, but MANZ are very expensive to buy.
Deffrolla equipped Battlewagons can cross the board pretty fast, are quite resilient and can ruin a tank's day when they reach it. Might be worth a look

Bikerz would run me over a bit, price-wise.
I think I want to run shoota mobz, led by a pk nob, and then have a squad of rokkit boyz to wreck vehicles. Whilst not having any vehicles in my army.
Looking at my dex, once I get to 1500pts, a fun/fluffy/unwinnable list is 4+ trunks with choppa boyz in 'ard armour, led by a big mek.

You can only have one Ardboyz unit per army.
Dumb but true.

I want to get out of my comfort zone (ie turbo charging and being on the other side of the board in 1 turn, and then running circles around my opponent until they are diminished to squat ) Automatically Appended Next Post: :( about the ard boyz, guess I over looked it

My first 500pts is gonna be straight shoota boyz. Then maybe I'll get burna boyz, and pop em in trukks at 1000pts

They can't take trukks as a ride, unless they are jacking them from someone else (like a boyz or nobz squad)
No dedicated transport option, and you can't buy trukks any other way.
Battlewagon Burnas can be fun though if you don't mind burning a HS slot, or they can take Looted Wagon as a cheaper but squishier option.

Big Mek in Kustom Dragster with Soopa-Gun
|
i'll tell you the same i tell every other new ork. Battleforces.
Regardless of what list you want to run in the end, buy 2-4 of these things. You can use the Bikes to make a Bikernob missile, you get 20boyz in each, and Trukks are the best conversion kit there is. You can build pratically anything from a trukk kit. To top it off the Battleforce is actually cheaper than the 4 boxes it contains (20boyz is 2 boxes btw).
500pts, i think green tide is about all you can pull off. I think, anyway, never played that low. The first game i played was 1000 and i pretty much just had battleforce units and Ghazzy on the field lol.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.
14000pts Big 'n Bad Orkz
6000pts Admech/Knights
7500pts Necron Goldboys |

Yeah no matter what you'll need boyz and lots of them. at 500pts at least 40 would be nice, more if you actually want to focus on green tide. Also, learn how to convert and get really good at it. Then you can make an insane amount of stuff using nothing but boxes of boyz, grotz, trukks, and a healthy handful of orky engineering. For example, all of my lootaz are made with bitz from IG heavy weapon teams and left over sponson weapons from my russes. I only bought one loota kit, and that was for the really burna head with the cigar
