I'm having a problem with puppet master (telepathy p.147).

My friend tells me I have to roll my BS to hit with puppet master, then roll his unit's BS to hit with his weapon.

So i would have to roll my psychic test, then would have a deny the witch, then roll to hit, then saves, then roll to hit from targeted model, then roll to saves again from the unit under fire...

IMO, we should not have to roll the psyker''s BS to hit with puppet master and resolve it has a malediction happening during the shooting phase.

I also wonder what happens if I use this spell on a unit containing only one model such as a vehicle and i get 6-10 when rolling my Ld

You roll your Psychic test. If successful, the target unit gets to Deny. If unsuccessful roll to hit. If successful the selected model (either the chosen model or random) makes a shooting attack. Roll To Hit using the victims BS. Roll To Wound. Roll saves (if applicable).

If there is only 1 model in the unit then that is the only model that can suffer the effects, as there is no other random model.

Puppet master is a Focused Witchfire.

The rules for Witchfire/Focused Witchfire's are on Page 69'

It tells you exactly how it works.

Pretty much, yes: power description say: focussed witchfire (must roll to hit & check if you select the right target) that if successful allows you to shoot with one of opponents' models (and shooting also requires a series of rolls; it is also "right" in a logical way

Why as a malediction, since it is a focussed witchfire?
Also, maledictions "weaken enemies by reducing characteristics or inflicting penalising SR" (page 69)... and puppet master doesn't do any of the two things

Well... when you target a single vehicle or a lone IC, you "do not have" to concentrate to pick him out of the squad...
Logically speaking, you haven't "distractions" or other potential targets near who could attract the warp energies, so the power connects (if you pass the psychic test, of course)

it may be important to add that the model is chosen at random only if your Psychic test roll is higher than 5, as per Focussed witch fire rules.

This isn't quite right. Since Puppetmaster doesn't cause wounds, the model your Psyker shoots at doesn't get any saves. The only way to stop the power is DtW--he can't take saves against it.
