Hello all. I'm working on some fire warrior conversions for a kill teams event ill be hosting. The painting isn't close to finished, but let me know what you think.

I used parts from Chaos Marauders from the fantasy line.

They look epic! Great work, you should make them a Cthulu Sept!

Good stuff.

I like the color variation from the base to the model, and your range of shading and details.

Not sure what I think about the chaos parts - (I neither like nor dis-like them) - but if you like it, thats great!

excellent base work - is the rock cork?

thanks for sharing!

The rock is indeed cork with sand glued in the cracks.

As to the color variation, thanks! I decided I needed a bright contrasting color, so I gave them all pink anime/rave hair. I wasn't sure at first, but fading to white at the times helped.

Hmm. It seems like you've gone for a gritty, weathered, been-through-the-trenches-veterans sort of look. If that's the case, then bravo, you've achieved it.

The look seems a little out of place in a Tau army, however. I think the Tau look better with a clean cut, fresh faced look, a tidiness of character that is devoid of soft edges or blemishes even where they would be appropriate. I just think it fits their shtick better. The mottled purple color (extensive dry brushing?) looks good, don't get me wrong, I just think that Tau would benefit more from a single color that doesn't look scratched, faded, or worn.

I like the moustaches. Never seen anyone do that on Tau before. I may use those on some of my own Tau, if you wouldn't take offense. Your dynamic posing of your squad is really excellent, by the way, a real next-level display. Please don't think I don't like your models (I do). I just think we have differing opinions on the style that best suits a Tau army, and to tell the truth, I'm not sure which of the two opinions is in the majority.

Best of luck with your kill teams competition.

Thanks for the feedback, Jimsolo. I actually tend to play a Tau army featuring Commander Farsight as the HQ. If you read the background on him, you see that he's basically been cutoff and gone rogue from the rest of the Tau Empire. My take on that is that the rank and file that went with him have become a little hardened and grizzled over time. I wanted their armor to be a little beat up and dirty to reflect this.

Also, the Farsight crew doesn't have any Ethereals with them and the background seems to indicate that the Ethereals keep the Tau on the straight and narrow. Farisight's splinter Tau would therefore have slipped down the path towards the more background "grimdark" of the 40k universe.

I did some more work also (reposted from my WIP blog, check it out! kriswallminis.blogspot.com)

I did some more work on my Tau Kill Team today. I got the weapons more or less done.

I also tried something new on the little shields. I tried to get a nice even gradient from one color to another. I want the armor in general to be a little dirty and smudged, but for the areas I would consider to be powered to be gleaming and bright. This includes the little shields as well as the power indicators on the backpacks.

The more I paint these guys, the more they're taking on a colorful anime sort of style. I'm kind of digging it.

I also colored in some armor panels with The Fang (old Shadow Grey) and highlighted with whatever the next color up is. I'm not entirely sure if everything looks appropriate as I'm colorblind! haha. I pretty much just stick to the basics and match highlights to bases. The new GW paint line is spectacular for people like me. Everything lines up together really well and the paints tend to come in three color blocks.

And I remembered to color in the bare arm dude's arm. Looks much better to me now.

Let me know what you think.

And here are a couple of shots of the power level meters on the backpacks.

I like the power meters. You have an interesting artisticinterpretation of the Farsight Enclave, but I think you've brought it to life very well.

How did you do the moustaches, if I may ask?

The mustached heads are from the Fantasy Chaos Marauders kit. I shaved off the noses and carved a slit in the forehead.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm really just trying new techniques. I've been paying attention to all the things James Wappell (Inquisitor Wappellious) has been posting lately. I'm trying to up my game in the shading and smooth gradient transition arenas. Hence, these models have lots of gradients (the hair, the power meters, the shields).
