I know the new ed has been out forever, but do to un ending overtime at work I have only gotten a couple games in via the new addtion and after reading over all the posts about flier spamming and air battles and what not I am curious. What would be some good tactics for armies without fliers?
As
1, My sisters of battle army is solely sisters ,no allies, thus no aircraft
2, My IG is a heavily themed foot army,no tanks ,,,though I have built a couple counts as models for field batteries(griffons or basilisks)
3 could not think of a good way to convert / scratch build a good looking non tank hydra

Well, for IG, what works well is twinlinking your guns and forcing your opponent to reroll cover saves. In that order.
Also, Sabre batteries are supposed to be the bomb at taking out fliers, might want to look into those for IG.

Sisters with no allies will be tricky. Your best bet would be to buy an Aegis Defense Line and use the Quad Gun. Retributors manning the Quad Gun can be nasty...4 Twin-Linked, Rending Autocannon shots.
If you're playing a fully foot-based guard army, you can probably just ignore the flyers. Most of them will only pick off a few models at a time, starting on turn 2 at the earliest. They won't do enough damage to even make their points back.
Once again, a defense line can be very helpful here. You have 4 point Guardsmen that can get a 2+ cover save when they go to ground.
If you use a Company Command Squad, "Bring it down" can be useful with a bunch of autocannons/lascannons. Any twin-linked, high strength shots can do some damage.
Lastly, you could also use an Officer of the Fleet. It's not super reliable, but you could delay flyers for a turn or two (by delaying reserves).

I concur on the Aegis Defense line and Quadgun--i got torn up by the Skyfire special rule last week, too, which also helps protect against Deep Striking stuff.
Beyond that, can your IG Heavy Weapons teams take Missile Launchers, perhaps with the "Flakk" anti-air missiles? That would give you some decent protection against flyers. Fire Dragon Exarch w/ Crack Shot and Tank Hunters on a quad gun.
BS5, twin linked, Ignores cover (jink/evade) and re-rolls armor pens. Almost guaranteed dead flier a turn. Been using this combo with my DE/CWE list, so nasty!

Don't forget that SoB get this: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Navy/AVENGER_STRIKE_FIGHTER.html .
Put three Avengers in your heavy support to go with that quad gun and you've got pretty good AA against anything short of true flyerspam.

IG can't take flakk missiles. Only CSM and DA so far.

Themed armies and competitive play rarely go hand in hand.
So if your going for a themed list, your setting yourself up with a handicap. If you want to play competitive games, I suggest dropping the theme. Vendettas are incredibly anti-flier.
If your just playing beer and pretzel games, then it does not matter.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

As for themes not being competitive,,,I've blown armies off the table in one turn before, run down terminators, ect,,,,,this army has been in development since 4th ed........I play it because,,,I enjoy it and everyone runs tanks and valks,,,,ect,,,same reason I play sisters and shelved my BT,,,anyways Im rambling,,,,,
I am taking a defense line and quad gun for my IG,might paint it up to go with either force,,,not sure on that one yet.
As to HWT-I am taking 4 batteries=12 lascannons
I thought the quad gun took away the jinx rule for fliers,,,is that right or just for a hydra?
Are the Avengers legal at tournies and what not or just where they ok via houserules forgeworld stuff???
I guess I am wondering, are fliers really that horrible to face or are they being over hyped ????

Just the Hydra.

Depends on the tournament. The Avenger, like all non-Apocalypse FW units, is part of standard 40k. According to GW, you can take one just like an IG player can take a Vendetta, or an Ork player can take a Dakkajet. However, since GW doesn't run any tournaments the decision whether or not to have a "no FW rules" house rule is up to the individual TO. The only way to find out whether or not a given tournament will allow your Avengers (or any other unit) is to ask the person running it.

Depends on the flyer. That guy who brought a single Lightning? Feel pity for them as you table them. That guy who brought three Helldrakes? He's going to wipe out entire SoB units with those AP 3 flamers.

Is there a list some where of legal forgeworld units? I have looked all over the GW site but do not see anything listed.
I wonder how many points that avenger is,,,wish exorcists could be taken in squadrons like other tanks.
So it seems auto cannons are a popular anti air(aircraft or monsters) choice,,,,cool.
I guess I just need to get some games in,,just don't get the swoop, hover, stuff,,,,,maybe sometime in april or june,,,,,le sigh

Armoured fist heavy weapon squads can take flakk missiles and even voxes. They are pretty rubbish though, as they have to take a chimera and use a heavy slot.

Don't worry about it. It is from ABG so fairly unknown anyway.
