I'm having a bit of a debate with someone about the positioning of unit command? Do they have to be placed in base to base with each other?

They need to be in the first rank, where exactly is up to you.

Aye, no requirement to have them b2b, as long as they are all in front and as long as they push to be in cc.

I usually put my champion dead center so he's most likely to be in the fray. I put all of my standard bearers on the front right corner of the units to make it look cool across the army. The champion's positioning is the only one that tactically makes any difference at all. Everything else is aesthetic.

Actually according to the rulebook (pg.92-95) only the musician is required to be in the front rank to give his CC benefit, while none of his other effects require anything but him being in the unit.
So if you have lots of characters in the unit move the banner back before the musician

Um, no. It says right on Pg. 92 that they all have to be in the front rank.

The exception is combat, where you can Make Way! to displace command

I fail to see where i said the opposite, i was just pointing out something i've seen done wrong – mainly the pushing back of musicians.

The implication that if you have lots of characters in the unit you would "Push back" command. You did not specify that this could ONLY be done during Make Way!

For clarity: if you have a 5x6 block of (insert model here) that has the full command and three characters in it, one character goes in the second rank until close combat where that character may choose to Make Way.

Make Way is not mandatory, correct?
