It doesn't work on the bearer, ever.
You target a friendly or enemy unit with at least one daemon it it any time during the movement phase.
If it's an enemy unit, all daemons in the unit lose -1 to their invul save.
If it's a friendly unit, all daemons in the unit get +2 to their invul save on a 3+, -1 otherwise. In either case, neither of these results affect the bearer.
Crystal clear?
This does mean you can give your Warp Talons +2 to their invul save. If they're Tzeentch marked, that's a 2++ invul! (yet still terrible! *roar*)

You can also use skullcannons to shoot at whatever they are going to charge solving their grenade problems.... I swear I'll find a way to make them work! *roar*

A 2+ invuln save is pretty darn amazing. That just about makes them viable, if you get it off.

To be specific - you can use the Grimoire of True Names on the bearer's own unit, but the rules then clarify that the effects don't affect the bearer himself.
(added) ...I just spotted the title, too. Grim-noire. Is that like grimdark film noir?
