My daughter has been bugging me to start an army for her for over a year. I've been puuting her off for obvious reasons (price, unsure of intrest, difficulty of hobby) but she has a one track mind and after picking an army, waiting (1 1/2 years and still buggin), learning the basics of painting on old Orks, and me recently getting a large prize support, I have broken down and bought her a crap load of her favorite army the Necrons. We are building one unit at a time and I will be teaching her the rules and how to play at the same time. She is 7 and will be 8 soon and I told her she had to wait till she was 8 to play but we would learn and paint up to then. I figured we would start with just the basic troops, an Overlord, and one vehicle (I have tons of Necrons so could build most things in codex). This would be to learn the basic rules (and Necron basic rules) and to slowly start to get a large blob of painted warriors. So here goes, any advise would be appriciated as I have never played Necrons before but have 3 other armys. HQ: Necron OverLord (semp weave , MSS ,warscythe) Troops: 10 Warriors (on ground with Overlord) 9 Warriors in a Ghost Arc This should be just under 500 points. I know there are more killy 500 point lists but I think this is the best to learn with, any thoughts? Shes pretty competitive and smart, if shes good enough by next year I will help her play in the BAO

Well, thats a decent starter list for sure, I'd look at swapping a unit of warriors out for some immortals with tesla carbines to escort her lord so that unit can serve as a counter-charge unit of some sort.

@iguy91 I thought about that but I dont want to confuse her with too many different stat lines yet but thanks for the suggestion.
@KonTheroy Thats what I was thinking, that way she learns the mechanics of a transport and repair special rule.
@ShadarLogoth....Awww shucks, thanks.
@Merc Row Hells ya, my goal is to see her crush a grown mans ego and then see her rub it in a little (just a joke but it would be funny, some people take this game pretty seriously). At least we get to spend more time together before she starts liking makeup and junk.
@thread Any advice on where to grow from here?

I would like to see her crush a grown man's ego with these necrons!
It depends how complicated you want to make her army.
I've seen people run Lords /w orbs in Necron Warrior squads (4x12) and then some heavy destroyers to pop tanks.
Fairly effective, and she'd only have to remember very few stat lines.
You could build on that, and go ahead and get her some wraiths, because they seem to tie down anything melee like for a few turns and dish out a few wounds themselves.
I don't play necrons, but i'm sharing my experience fighting against them.

That's such an awesome attitude! That sounds sarcastic, but it isn't. I really think it's awesome.
My sister who's almost 20 years younger than me started getting into boys and make-up at 8/9 years old. It's sad when a loved one becomes so predictably one dimensional.

@mike Thanks. I just want to start off simple, once she gets the basics I will add different units.I would like to build her a competitive army and was thinking of wraiths or an annihilation barge next.

An annihilation barge would be fun. I guess it depends what she'd prefer, a big floating tank or some .. well .. wraiths. Let her decide! That's a large part of the fun of the hobby, choosing your next model.
But, For the simplicity of learning to play, maybe just get more warriors?
Edit: After your edit, if you want her to be competitive it might be worth looking at the necron flyers eventually.

Well at the moment you've (she's) got 505 points, but as it's just a training wheel army, I guess we'll let it slide.
(though, if you want to get it under 500, just drop a Warrior out of the G.Ark)
For practice sake, yeah, that should suffice, but make sure once she starts scaling up in points levels that she combines both units of 10 into one unit of 20, and then gives the Overlord a ResOrb (maybe add a Royal Court, too. have them sit in the G.Ark while the Warriors walk along side of it)
Also, any man who does not submit his ego to be crushed by a little kid who is just starting out to encourage them to keep playing deserves to have his little toy soldiers taken away from him and made to sit in time out (aka. forever alone).

@Griddlelol Thanks for the encouragement. @Skoffs I was planning on putting the two squads together at higher points but would you recomend more Warriors or Imortals as a second troop? (also updated list to fix points, thanks for the catch... we do want to stay honest) @KonTheory And Mike Shes pretty smart so after the basics I dont see why I couldnt add both unit types. @Asmodai I already have 2xAnnihilation Barge Boxes, 2X Wraith Boxes and a Destroyer Lord to build..... I dont mind if shes tough as nails as long as shes a good sport about it 750 is looking like adding annihilation barge, 3 wraiths, and 2 crypteks.

Without another transport (G.Ark or N.Scythe), I'd go for Immortals. They're more or less able to hold their own without too much support. Unsupported Warriors are free first blood/victory points.
And speaking of free kills, be careful about those Wraiths. Units of less than 5 have a nasty habit of disappearing very easily. (instead of Crypteks, it might be a better idea to bump the Wraith unit up to 5. you can't really afford to skimp when using those guys)

All you really need to do with this list, is shift warriors out of the squad inside the Ark, and put more in the squad outside the Ark. Just makes your opponent more frustrated with the resilience of the unit outside of the Ark, thinking it's the easier target.

@Akar So your saying 5 warriors in the Arc and 14 with the Overlord on the ground?
@Skoffs Where would you go from 500 to 750 to 1000?
I have to work with is; 2 Battle forces, 2 box wraiths, 2 Anni Barges, a destroyer (& destroyer lord upgrade sprue), a N.scythe, 1 box of Imortals, and 1 box of Pretorians. Also planning on getting more N.Scythes (as that is her favorite model, go figure right?)

Yeap, 5/14 or 6/13 - Either would work. Even at 500 pts, you'll find that most players will start on the 10 Warriors. At 13+ it's not so clear what to shoot first.
(I know it's directed at Skoffs)
Up to 1k get up to 3 squads of Warriors and a 2nd Ark, use any loose pts to just add more warriors to the squads inside. 'Sandwich' a large ground unit between the 2 Arks. From there it's just a matter of adding the Annihilation Barges and/or Wraiths. You could also take a Nightscythe for the squad on the ground, and just run it solo.
After that, you've got a solid force to build off of. Then add Immortals, and look at more Court Options.

Thanks Akar. We'll just focus on painting up all the Warriors and Ghost Arcs. This and learning should keep us busy for awhile.

Ohhoho, she has a pretty legit selection to choose from there, dad.
With what you've got you can make any of the following combinations (all are mainstays in most 'Cron armies):
• Destroyer Lord (Sep.Weave, MSS) + 5-6 Wraiths (1-3 with Whip Coils) = 345-400 points
• Ghost Ark + 15-20 Warriors + Overlord/Lord (ResOrb w/ optional WS, Sep.Weave, MSS) = 375-535 points
• 5-10 Immortals (Tesla) + Harbinger of Destruction (Gaze of Flame w/ optional Solar Pulse) = 130-235 points
• 5 Warriors + Harbinger of the Storm + Nightscythe = 190 points
• 5 Deathmarks + Harbinger of Despair + either Nightscythe or Veil of Darkness for Harbinger = 155-225 points
• 2 Annihilation Barges + Doomscythe = 355
I would advise against buying Games Workshop's Cryptek models, too. They're expensive, boring, and ugly. Most people just use the Praetorian box to make custom Crypteks out of (can make Lords, too, as a cheaper alternative). You may have to help her there, but just be creative with extra Deathmark heads and Praetorian rods and bodies (minus the anti-grav backpack they're normally supposed to have). End result usually looks something like this -
