Evening all,

After years gathering dust, I finally decided to assemble my Forgeworld Void Dragon Phoneix. It's looking pretty decent now, but I need to figure out how to get it coupled with a proper flying base.

The standard 2mm hole, drilled just off it's centre of gravity, is no use for a standard flying base, and it will look pretty daft skimming 3" off the table when it should be a proper flyer.

I have a large flying base for my Helldrake, which I figure I can use interchangeably with the Phoenix, so I'm looking for tips on how to affix the model to the base.

Any suggestions or prior examples welcome!

Thanks in advance,

A.

If you want to use the GW flying base with the acrylic "+" shaped stand, you can take a 1/4" gouge out of the bottom of the vehicle, then fill the gap in using this method:

If that doesn't suit your fancy, you can take a short section of brass tubing, drill a hole and insert the tubing in the hole on the bottom of your model, then tap out the tubing. For the flight stand, you'd use a die to cut threads into a solid brass rod where it'll attach to the vehicle. Tap out the bottom and insert a screw through the bottom of the oval base into the tapped brass rod.

Here's a rough idea of what I'm talking about:

Thanks Jordan,

What's the easiest way to "scoop" out an appropriately sized hole from the resin on the underside of the model?

I've got some greenstuff that I just inherited from a friend of mine, so I'm all set there.

Thanks in advance,

A.

I just had an idea. It will take some precision, but if you put a large FW model together, I assume you're competent.

4 short brass rods arranged in a square, ~4mm apart (measure the flying stand!) around the model's centre of gravity.

This will allow you to slot the flyer onto the stand with the rods snugly hugging the stand from all directions.

Your best bet is either a 1" or 1 1/4" drill bit a spade drill bit in the same size. If you can find a regular drill bit in that size, you don't necessarily need a drill, you can turn it by hand. That'll make the process easier to control, safer, but it'll take a while to do.
