I will now try to do aliments for various 40k factions, correct me if I am wrong somewhere:

Chaos - Chaotic Evil.
Dark Eldar - Chaotic Evil.
Inquisition - Lawful Neutral. ( with exception of some Inquisitors who are Lawful Good ).
Imperial Guard - Lawful Neutral ( with the exception of some characters who are Lawful Good and others who are Lawful Evil ).
Sisters of Battle - Lawful Good.
Space Marines - Lawful Neutral ( with the exception of some chapters being Lawful Good and other being Lawful Evil ).
Eldar - Neutral Evil.
Orks - Neutral
Tau Empire - Lawful Neutral.
Necrons - Neutral Evil.
Tyranids - Neutral.
Imperium of Man ( overall ) - Lawful Neutral.

The hardest was with Eldar adn SoB.
SoB traits makes them Lawful Good but they are known to kill their own allies if they are corrupted.
Eldar have all the traits of Neutral Evil but occasionally they will help others ( Imperium ) if they wanted.

So what do you think? Please correct me if I am wrong somewhere and post your own opinion.
You can use this to decide on alignment.

The universe has many horrors yet to throw at us. This is not the end of our struggle. This is just the beginning of our crusade to save Humanity. Be faithful! Be strong! Be vigilant!

Man, I thought this was ailments, talking about diseases. Just FYI, it's "alignments."

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Alignments were always a horrible idea even in D&D. No one can ever agree what they mean.

Also, there's no fething way Imperium is not Lawful Evil.

Chaos - Chaotic Evil.
Dark Eldar - Neutral Evil.
Inquisition - Lawful Evil
Imperial Guard - Lawful Neutral
Sisters of Battle - Lawful Evil
Space Marines - Lawful Neutral
Eldar - Neutral Evil.
Orks - True Neutral
Tau Empire - Lawful Neutral.
Necrons - Lawful Evil
Tyranids - True Neutral.

Imperium of Man (Post heresy) - Lawful Evil.

That would be my take on the universe. It's so damn grimdark and punishing a universe, very few get to be good. EVER.

The Marines and Imperial guard are wholly neutral just by virtue that the guard are essentially forced labour, and the marines come in many shapes, sizes and creeds.

I have a hard time classifying the (current) necrons, as they seem much more selfish than the tau, but not as out-rightly murderous in some cases as the imperium.

Old Necrons are Neutral Evil.

Necrons can go from Lawful Evil, to Neutral, to Chaotic, depending on the Dynasty.

I'd give them an Overall Classification as Lawful Evil though, as there tends to be Order among most of them.

6000+ Order. Unity. Obedience.

Indeed. I'd even be tempted to put them on True Neutral (as a race) because of the range of Dynasties. (True Neutral of course representing that the race has many facets rather than actually being True Neutral)

This is the explanation of Lawful Neutral: "Lawful Neutral is called the "Judge" or "Disciplined" alignment. A Lawful Neutral character typically believes strongly in Lawful concepts such as honor, order, rules and tradition, and often follows a personal code. A Lawful Neutral society would typically enforce strict laws to maintain social order, and place a high value on traditions and historical precedent. Examples of Lawful Neutral characters might include a soldier who always follows orders, a judge or enforcer that adheres mercilessly to the word of the law, and a disciplined monk.
Characters of this alignment are neutral with regard to good and evil. This does not mean that Lawful Neutral characters are amoral or immoral, or do not have a moral compass, but simply that their moral considerations come a distant second to what their code, tradition, or law dictates. They typically have a strong ethical code, but it is primarily guided by their system of belief, not by a commitment to good or evil."

And this is for Lawful Evil: "Lawful Evil is referred to as the "Dominator" or "Diabolic" alignment. Characters of this alignment see a well-ordered system as being easier to exploit, and show a combination of desirable and undesirable traits; while they usually obey their superiors and keep their word, they care nothing for the rights and freedoms of other individuals and are not averse to twisting the rules to work in their favor. Examples of this alignment include tyrants, devils, undiscriminating mercenary types who have a strict code of conduct, and loyal soldiers who enjoy the act of killing.
Like Lawful Good Paladins, Lawful Evil characters may sometimes find themselves faced with the dilemma of whether to obey law or evil when the two conflict. However, their issues with Law versus Evil are more concerned with "Will I get caught?" versus "How does this benefit me?""

By these two definitions Imperium is more Lawful Neutral as they are doing evil only when they have to ( for example wiping out last standing Imperial Guard Regiment and invading Tyranids to stop the Tyranid threat there and by doing this ending their threat and saving hundreds more worlds ). Imperium is, like it or not, capable of doing good things, they occasionally help Eldar and Tau, have peace agreement with the Tau Empire and most Importantly they fight Chaos witch is entombment of all evil - Lawful Evil doesn't for that , they have to choose between obeying orders and doing evil, Imperium is only choosing evil when survival of Mankind is at stake.

In what catagory do you put CSM? Putting them all under Chaotic Evil might be a bit of a misnomer. Some have clearly defined plans or schemes which takes quite a large amount of co-operation (Thousand Sons/Alpha Legion). Neutral/lawfull evil seems to be what Abbadon has going on with his Black Crusade (thinking of the Antecanis attack for neutral). CSM work together and obey orders as long as they get something out of it. The strongest amongst them rule and the others obey, biding their time for a weakness they can exploit.

The D&D alignment system is flawed but IS flexible and I believe it to be in the interests of players and DM to define the spectrum of good to evil. In my eyes, by all counts, the Imperium is an absolutely evil institution, who uses lawful methods of structure. Thus: Lawful Evil.
