Subject: Land Raider or Storm Raven?

So I have a brand new Land Raider in the box that I was planning on running my Assault Termies from, but now it looks like fliers are the craze and that the Storm Raven is similar in cost.
I can't see a place that says it can be chosen as a transport like a LR can, but my list has room in Heavy Support anyway so I could swing one.
Should I exchange my LR towards buying a Storm Raven?
pros/cons to each?

A stormraven is a gunship. A landraider is a transport.
If you're bringing assault terminators an assault ramp transport, the LR is better. It isn't affected by poor reserve rolls, it can't be shot out the sky causing you to loose 33% of your terminators and it isn't vulnerable while it delivers the troops inside.
The stormraven is a good choice for firepower, the transport is a bonus (or more of a trap). The landraider is a good choice for transport, and the firepower is a bonus.

With my Blood Angels, running a Land Raider redeemer seems like quite a surprise for people. I stick my librarian inside it with 'sanguinary shield' and people tend to just not know what to do. They come prepped for shooting down storm ravens only to face a 'traditional' force with no flyers and they've swapped out most of their melta guns.

This sums it up nicely. While both the raider and the raven can do the same things, they have much different focuses.

Thank you for the input, I'll stick with my land raider for now, and will put the Stormraven in my larger lists.

I don't swap melta out of any of my lists. I particularly like MM, which even at 24" are like krak missiles that don't suck.

Well, indeed, the Stormraven is a gunship and the Landraider an assault vehicle. Nothing else. I'd be inclined to put a shooty squad like some Acolyths with meltas in a Stormraven. But Assault Termies are better transported by a Crusader or Redeemer.

personally I would opt for the crusader, it has a slightly better Transport Capacity (being able to carry 8 termies is better than 6) and with a single upgrade can deal with anything in front of it, although it's strength does lay in putting out a rediculas number of shots agasint troops.
twin-linked bolters, assult canons and multi-melta ftw

Mhmm, I liked the Redeemer in 5th edition, but in 6th the Crusader is the best imho. It has a ton of Dakka it can put out, nearly all twin-linked, which is useful considering that they're going to be snap-shooting a fair bit. Plus it has the highest transport capacity.

Stormraven needs to Hover in order to deploy the termies and still assault something. The instant it goes into hovermode that thing is dead, AV12 isnt that hard to pen when the 6s to hit is out of the way.
Local GK player tried that once, the instant that thing went hovermode my 10 lootas that didnt get scorched by the DK just exploded that thing. Fliers should never go into hovermode unless its a win-or-lose situation (end of the game)

And they can be assaulted. AV 12 is easy to crunch with a powerfist.

He made the mistake of not assaulting your lootas with his assault terminators , but I agree. For terminators the Land Raider is better, for the Stormraven I would run either death company or vanguard vets, its quite nasty to see 10 death company run out of a stormraven and shred everything in their path.

Except I will never allow the SR to live long enough to dump off the DC. DC make very impressive smears when they take S10 hits.

I'll mirror everyone else in that the LR is a serious transport, but thanks to 6th ed, the storm raven no longer is.
The one tiny thing I'd add, though, is a hilarious thing I saw at a local gaming store. A player was playing henchmen GK and he had a big wad of crusaders in a storm raven.
The storm raven exploded. Eight crusaders were caught in the fireball. Six were wounded. With a bit of luck, he passed all six 3++'s.
Eight crusaders, having been blown up in an airplane and hurtling down to the earth pick themselves up out of the scorched crater, brush the dirt off their uniforms as flaming hunks of debris crash down to earth around them, mutter "well, we didn't even want that transport anyways", and then proceed to murder a squad of scouts that were hiding on an objective. Presumably, they were too in awe of what had happened to attempt to fight back.
Anyways, the moral of the story is that it can be okay to take storm ravens as transports if you have storm shields. Or, I suppose all that much by means of anti-air. AV12 immunity to melta is going to be kind of tough for most stuff to take down without skyfire.

I would probably be tempted to use a cheap unit (like 5 man scouts) in the Raven so not much is lost if it goes down, but near the end of the game it can quickly hover and drop them off to grab an objective if it's around.
For serious transport, the Land Raider is my preference. I prefer the Crusader and Redeemer variants this edition, but even they can be popped on turn 1.

Yeah that's pretty much my experience with it. My Storm Eagle got shot down and I had a bunch of Termies in it, but I think only 2 of them died. Then the survivors dusted themselves off and held the gauntlet until the end of the game.
