so today i played my first game using evil forces w/ pikes. but i am confused why it matters..
point being. if i have spears or if i go ahead and get in combat w/ the other evil lackey, i am still getting two attacks vs the good player.
so can someone tell me the benefit of spears/pikes when i can just put both in base contact and fight?
thanks!

Have you read the rules for pikes and spears where you can support models in close combat without actually being in base contact with the enemy?

yeah i get that part.. so the only benefit is that you cant be attacked if you are just supporting? it just seemed too simple. maybe i am over thinking it.

If you have two models fighting an enemy with two or more attacks and they are both in a fight, then if they lose, they both can be killed.
If however you have him support with a spear, only the guy that is in base contact at the start of the fight with the enemy can be killed.
Pikes, are similar to spears with the exception that they can support through another spear or pike an exception to being able to only be supported by one model.
Additionally, the model that is supporting completely disregards its own fight and strength values, advantageous in situation such as Black Guard of Barad Dur being support by orcs with spears.
Hope that clears it up for you.

Yeah, as Krellnus said.
What's awesome about spears is that I can get my badass heroes (say, I don't know, Gothmog) and then support him with 2 Easterling Pikemen. That's 5 (I think?) attacks at Gothmog's Fight and Strength!

Krellnus, the rule is different in the hobbit rules. If you want to support with two people both must be pikes.
