I prefer the Swarmlord myself, to me ML2 > Wings + Devourers.

Well... yeah, yeah they are. Iron Arm makes them unstoppable, and you're likely to get it on one of them if you take 2. Paired Flyrants are an auto-win versus some armies, and are tough to handle for just about every army. Now, if you just throw them alone at an army, yes your opponent will gun them down. The trick I've found is to keep them grounded, preferably behind terrain or out of LOS, and wait until your reserves come in. Aternatively, get a few fast units to escort them up the board for threat overload. I'm quite comfortable paying 285 points each for two Flyrants.

Did you read jy2's big series of Bay Area Open reports, in the Bat Reps forum? If you're a Tyranid player, especially one considering flyrants, I highly recommend that you check them out.

Yup, they're very useful and usually my MVP.

Here's the thing; don't consider them in a vacuum. They are the long arm of the Tyranid force who can zip out early and cause mayhem in the enemy's firebase while the other monsters and gribblies make their way up the field.

I just ran one in tandem with the Swarmlord at 1850 against a BoD DA army. He flew out and caused havoc (with iron arm no less) eating fire and assaults for 4 turns while the Swarmlord made a 12" "Don't come here" zone right in the middle of the board (We played The Relic).

I have also run 2 and they basically rip a new one in anything they come near (which is a LOT with 24" movement and 2x TL Devourerers).

Nasty trick against all non-C:SM equivalents: Assault them and smash attack them. You will typically win combat but not by enough to force them to break, so you get a nice assault-shield to keep you safe in the enemy shooting phase. Next turn just go normal attacks and wrench yourself out of combat to rinse-and-repeat in your own phase.

edit* Also, JY2 is the guy to watch for great Nid tactics. I have learned a ton from him so far.
