Hello. I have been looking into picking up 40k for a few years, and have finally started picking up miniatures. I picked up a copy of dark vengeance (as well as a number of codex books), and am working my way through the rules.
I am trying to decide what armies I want to collect (I want to work on two smaller armies to begin with, to get a feel for different play styles).
I am starting out with DA from Dark Vengeance, and am considering working on a Slaaneshi (daemon) army. Any advice along the way would be appreciated.

Definitely go with high point per model armies to start versus low point per model armies. That way your investment is minimal if you don't like those armies and can move to something else. The Demon armies seem to be more mid-range ppm with their recent update.
The DAs are great as are any Space Marine/Choas Marine centric army for being able to get your feet wet without blowing the bank at the start. I played my first 500pt game with 16 models off a Space Marine list if that tells ya anything.
The other thing to consider is that Tau and Eldar will both be getting an update this year, so don't go crazy if you plan on going with either of them (The Tau update will be very soon).
Other then that, I hope you have a lot of fun with it. There are haters out there because GW have raised thier prices, but what do you expect with inflation, and they really are still one of the cheapest (at least per model) providers of high quality models on the market. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions and I'll try to answer/point you in the right direction!!

Hey, newbie!
I agree with Earth Dragon on the kind of method to put into starting your army. If you do go with a Slaanesh army, you would be one of the few that I know who does so. Many go with the other Chaos god themes because they seem to bdo better.
Idk if the newest codex update has improved Slaneeshi models, but I just recommend you simply have fun.

Thanks for the quick replies, and the suggestions. I will definitely get some games under my belt before I invest too much further. I am working on my DA models, and have lists in mind for 500, 750, and 1000 points.
My reasoning for looking at Slaanesh for a second army are (for those curious)
1. It is (in my perception) a very assault-focused army (to contrast against my dark angels).
2. I like the look and feel of the models.
3. The new codex seems to have a good number of solid tactical/strategic options.
4. While a Khorne force may hit a bit harder once in cc, Slaaneshi daemons have a great advantage in terms of speed/mobility.
5. I have a cool paint scheme in mind.
6. I have a background for the force that both is cool (IMO) and works with the fluff (as far as I can tell).
7. While I do love the background/feel of Nurgle, the models themselves are not something I would be comfortable with (they are well done, but not my thing)

I forgot you got all those Chaos guys in the starter and you can just mix the Slaanesh in. I would still push towards favoring like a Chaos Marine Terminator squad or so with some demonettes. You definitely wanna get that ppm high at first, and go bulk unit filler later.
And this is strictly to help your pocket book. I saw a guy field 50 models in a 500 point game that was a devil to deal with because of the sheer amount of bodies. So zerg tactics very much work in 40k, and Slaanesh seems like it can field lots of models, but you can worry about that later

Thanks again for the welcomes (and the advice). I am especially appreciative for your input Earth Dragon. I am really enjoying the process of making my army.
I plan to play some games soon (as soon as I get my DA painted). I will post some possible lists for them in the proper section of the forums.
