Hi all,

I don't know if you guys have had as many problems as I've had with removing paint from models, but I finally came up with what seems to be a workable solution and avoids using harsh paint-strippers.

I've written an update about the process on my blog in case it's useful to anyone:

Cheers!

Dettol is quite and old trick, as is really warm sugar soap. I found Testors Elo is amazing, brush it on like paint, leave until the paint starts to 'crack' the brush off a layer at a time.

I only found out about the Dettol trick quite recently - it was clear it had been out there for a while but I'd done a lot of searching off and on over the years and didn't find it. So I figured as I'd tested it and personally seen it work, I'd spread the word. If I had a hard time finding it I'm sure others would too.

Thanks for the tip about Elo - not come across that product before. I've got more models that need some attention so when I get around to working them I'll be sure to check it out.

A friend showed me Totally Awesome cleaner and i will never use anything else. I had ~50 models to strip and i thought i would be forever. Simple Green didnt work after a week. I threw them in a jar with Totally Awesome, left it for 2 days, and dumped them out and they were 90% stripped without even scrubbing. I took a large brush and brushed over the models in groups and they came away perfectly stripped. Just stripped a bunch of SM with 3-4 layers of paint on each and it stripped most down to the plastic. Some it wouldnt remove the primer in 1 go, but i can deal with black primer.

Also, this stuff is cheap as anything.

A weird one is Fairy Power spray, we use it here and it works a treat. just leave in a sealed tub for a while and tooth brush the paint off. Be careful with finecast though, makes thin parts alot more bendy :0

Dettol vs Fairy vs Totally Awesome Cleaner - Are we sure we're still talking about wargames? This reads more like the script for an episode of the TV show "How clean is your house?"

Well, the GF knocked a pot of P3 Coal Black onto the floor the other day. We broke out the Simple Green I use for stripping and scrubbed it clean. The stain is barely noticeable after nearly an entire bottle ended up on the carpet.
