Hi Everybody,
Im starting a Grey Knights army and wanted something a little different from the standard silver colour, not too much different just a little different.
I was thinking the standard silver/grey with heavy highlighting/washing of red.
Im quite new to the Warhammer world so does anybody have some advise on paints and techniques on how I would achieve this?
Thanks in advance

Sounds pretty basic to do. I would go with a Base of Leadbelcher for silver. Wash with Nuln Oil, relayer with Chainmail, then highlight with various red layer paints and then glaze with Bloodletter to blend it all together.
For grey, I would recommend that you do edge highlighting rather than layer highlighting. Just paint them as if youwere painting them grey and go over all the hard edges with Mephiston red, then with Wild Rider red.
For grey, I am unsure of.

So leadbelcher, nuln oil, chainmail. Then highlight with Mephiston red and wild rider red, then tie it all together with bloodletter glaze? Sounds good thanks for the help

Just watch out on the Mephiston Red. Its a base paint so unless you thin in well it will more or less block out the silver.
You could use a layer paint but my habit means I go for base paints first.

Ahh ok, what about something like Wazdakka red, would that do the trick instead of mephiston?

I think using non-metallic reds over a metallic basecoat is going to look odd. I'd go for a high-contrast metallic finish (darkened black-silver/Leadbelcher all the way up to pure silver/the new version of Mithril Silver), then glaze over the whole thing with coats of dilute red ink (or whatever the Citadel red glaze is).
If going nonmetallic, instead, the layer paints will actually come in handy. Keep the red inclusions in your grey mixes pretty minimal, though, as the grey will easily be overpowered, giving you somewhat desaturated red tones instead of warm/red-tinted greys before you know it. Honestly, you could probably use the same "high contrast, then glaze with red ink" technique as with the metallic route, but I think mixing and layering normally will give you more distinct, clean results.

I think highlighting silver with red will be tricky to pull off, seeing as how most silvery metals tend to give off a natural bluish luster. That being said, adding a splash of color to Grey Knights is certainly doable. Like you, I too wanted to add some red to my Grey Knights, so instead of using a brown/sepia wash for shading on the gold lettering details (like on the shoulders), I used red instead. The result was awesome; fairly close to the studio scheme but different enough to stand from the herd.
Check out my gallery if you want to see how it turned out.

Ok so paint them how you normally would a Grey knight and then just keep washing with reds until I get the desired finish?

Not quite. If applied normally, a wash won't give an even red tint. As washes pool, you'll have a more intense red in the recesses and undersides than on the projecting/upper surfaces. You can use a premixed red wash just as easily as you can use diluted ink, but you want to apply thin, even coats - no pooling. This glaze allows for an evenness in the red tint that simply slapping on a wash doesn't. If you apply your shading and highlights to the underlying silver before glazing (black wash, gunmetal drybrush, pure silver edgelining or the like), the transparency of the ink/wash glaze will leave the shading intact.

I think what he means is that a wash won't give the effect you want so use the red glaze instead.
