Have these gone the way of the Dodo, or are they still viable?

Not a fun army to face or play really, it mostly turns on a single round of shooting in the first turn.

I have run with some interesting games, a full drop pod list, it is now the only list (I think) where you can do null deployment (you know my thoughts on full reserve DA termies.... ).

I have run 30 sternguard, all combi weaponed up in pods with 20 tac marines in pods and a mix of either tooled up libby pedro or vulkan. I was going to run it at a tourny in Malestrom in Jan but changed my mind last minute, pretty gutted I did as they are a fun army to play but yes you get the general idea their alpha strike is mean against most players.


Generally I pod down kill the elite units on the board and some tanks then they a battering back this is good in some respects as my troops are left untouched while my sternguard are alive. They do do well against elite armies and a squad of 10 sternguard with 2 heavy flamers and 8 combi flamers with Vulkan can kick out a serious amount of wounds (always having one shoot their normal ammo, therefore saving a combi flamer or 3 for overwatch wall of death plus the 3 HF in the squad). Not much has stood up to their volley!

Do you still have the Pod army? I haven't actually seen anyone field one in ages so I'm wondering if they're still viable/ competitive.

i run a squad or 2 in my Vulan army. with the movement away from mech it has hurt them though. there are ganes where combi melta sternguard come down without a high value target to go after.

They are helped in the new edition being able to deploy 6' from the pod, so there is a good chance they would be in perfect melta range though.

Sternguard are amazing there is no other way to describe them. There are so many options available to them they are great tank/montrous creature hunters getting special and heavy weapons for next to nothing I often run a squad of ten with with Lysander giving them rerolls on special ammo! Which more often than not can rapid fire the swarm lord down in one round of shooting, another way of using them stick them in a pod kit them out with meltas and gun down all vehicles in sight my friend does this and has had great success

They're very good, but you need to avoid suiciding them. MEQ lists dont' have the bodies to be doing that on a consistent basis. Especially guys that are 25 pts a model.
