Hi all, my first 1500pt local tournament is coming up April 13, 2013. There should be about 12 armies and I can expect at least: 2 Imperial guard, 1 Tyranid, 2 Tau, 1 Necron, 1 Chaos, and a variety of Space Marines (but no Ultramarine's). I recently got back into Warhammer 40k after a 7 year hiatus. I've never played in a tournament before and I am still pretty new; maybe 12 games lifetime in either fantasy or 40k. The last 2 months I've had 5 games with my new Ultramarine army. My record started out with 2 losses against Templar's and Chaos SM, but have since won 3 straight; 2 against Templar's and 1 against Space Wolve's at the local gaming spot. I would like some strategic advice/assurance based on what I field below.

HQ + Troop - 395pt:

Cato Sicarius - Infiltrate
Tactical Squad (10) - power fist, flamer, heavy bolter

HQ + Troop - 285pt:

Librarian - Force Dome, Avenger
Tactical Squad (10) - plasma gun, plasma cannon

Troop + Transport - 210pt:

Tactical Squad (10) - melta gun, multi- melta
Rhino - stormbolter

Elites + Transport - 200pt:

Veterans (5) - 5 combi-melta's, hellfire rounds
Drop Pod - stormbolter

Elites - 200pt:

Terminators - 4 power fist's, 1 power sword, stormbolter's

Heavy Support - 210pt:

Devastator Squad - 2 lascannon's, 2 plasma cannon's

Usually get my vets in right away to pop any tanks with their 5 combi-melta's in the drop pod. Love seeing a Landraider go first turn. I use Infiltrate with Cato to get a front line/objective established with the power fist, flamer, and heavy bolter. The Librarian and plasma squad are fire support and objective holder's. Devastator's do their job and provide support from a distance. the 3rd troop melta-squad is tagged with a rhino and is used to clean up any tank left behind by the vet's or devastator's. And finally, the Terminator's come in to provide ground assault support for any troop that need's it most; which, is usually Cato at the front line.

Welcome to dakka

You might want to post your list in the tactics section so you can get some good advice.

Nicely painted model and good luck for your first tournament, hope you do better than I just did at my first haha

Alright, I will assume Cato is the core of your army. He can give one Tac Squad Counterattack, Scout, Infiltrate or Tank Hunter... So I assume you are using it to infiltrate and estabish your fire line... IF you have one dreadnought or better yet an ironclad dreadnought, I would suggest dropping that in instead of your pricey sternguard. It will cause more problems and preserve those sternguard to use their pricey special ammo to your benefit.

So:

Cato: 200
Librarian: Gate of Infinity 100
Gate to take advantage of your other options.
Sternguard: 5 w Combi-Melta 150
Terminators: 5 200
Ironclad w Hvy Flamer & Melta in Drop Pod w Locator Beacon 190
A regular Dread with MultiMelta and Heavy Flamer is another option for 160

Tactical 10 w Combi-Flamer, Melta Gun, Multi-Melta 185
Short ranged anti-tank because this is infiltrating.
Tactical 10 w Plasma, Plasma Cannon 185

Devastator 10 w 3 ML & 1 Las Cannon 250
Missile Launchers because they are multipurpose and cheap. 1 Lascannon to take advantage of the Sergeant's ability to up one shot to BS 5.

1460 - leaving you with 40 points so add back that Power Fist on the 1st Tactical Sergeant and a Teleport Homer.

Tactics: Cato gives infiltrate to the 1st Tactical and they set up in forward area where you want to be... The devastators set up ideally in a high cover place to get a great field of fire to cover that position. Librarian and Cato sets up with the Sternguard. The 2nd Tactical moves up to support the first tactical. The terminators set up in reserve. The drop pod dread comes in to frag a tank with its melta or heavy squad with its heavy flamer...

Now you have an option... the Librarian and sternguard can gate in accurately to the drop pod (if it is within 24") and the terminators can also because of your Locator Beacon on the drop Pod. Or the terminators can reinforce the 1st squad dropping in accurately because of the teleport homer on the sergeant.

If you don't have an ironclad, the AOBR dreadnought with multi-melta could be dropped in... that gives you 30 more points to play with...
I would then add the deathwind launcher to the drop pod for hoard control and find something to spend the 10 points on... (2 melta bombs?)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If you feel Lucky... You could take your two rolls on the Telekinesis table:

1.Crush
2.Gate of Infinity
3.Objuration Mechanicum
4. Shockwave
5. Telekinesis Dome
6. Vortex of Doom
Default: Assail

You want Gate but this might be a nice combo with Crush or Objuration Mechanicum...

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka I would suggest posting this in the army lists subforum for the best results.

Thank's for the advice. Only problem is I don't have a dreadnought or missile launcher's. The only other models I have are another plasma cannon, 2 heavy bolter's, multi-melta, and 2 more lascannon's. I have the pieces to give the Drop Pod a deathwind and the rhino to a razorback.

I won't be getting anything new for a while; however, the dreadnought is first on my list.

Is Cato the best idea? Take a Chapter Master for the Orbital Bombardment.

Sub out the Heavy Bolter for the Missile Launcher.

Be careful when using plasma. They tend to blow up in my opinion.

If you are talking about Sternguard Veteran Units, they all come with Hellfire Rounds. As well as Kraken Rounds, Dragonfire Rounds, and Vengance Rounds. Camp these guys out behind defenses and you have killy stuff.

Termies come with powerfists and storm bolters. There is no need to post this again, you just need to post upgrades.

Warning about plasma above. You may want two missile launchers for the anti infantry option.

The problem with a Lascannon is the cost... however you could easily switch in the plasma cannon and 2 heavy bolters.. just combat squad your devastators... 1 Las +Sgt +3 bolter boys and 2 HB, 1 PC and 2 bolter boys... you don't want that poor lascannon shooting at infantry and you definitely don't want heavy bolters shooting at a tank.

The other thing I would recommend is buying an ADL... sooner or later you will face airpower and it is nice.
For now, do you have another 10 marines? If so make up a 3rd tactical squad perhaps a 5-man, Sgt with Combi-melta in the Drop Pod. The gate +sternguard is going to keep them alive alot longer.
