I have never played hail caesar, but I'd like to give it a try. Are there demo rules availible?
How does it stack to WAB?
Which would require less models, WAB or Hail Caesar?

I don't think there are demo rules available. You could check on Warlord's site and see if they have a QRS posted. That might be enough to get you started.

Hail Caesar is a totally different game than WAB.

For starters, there are no points values in the rulebook (but they did release them for the expansion books). So they're leaving it up to the players to determine the scenario and an "even" or historical matchup.

The game authors even spoke about it being an excuse to "use all their model collections" in the games, so the example games in the rulebook are these huge affairs with hundreds of models a side.

With regard to models, HC is built around "units" that are small, medium, and large, etc. They give examples of a "large" unit being, for ex, 24 models, but leave it up to the players to determine. So you could play a "large" unit as 12 models, or 16, as long as both players do the same thing.

HC plays like Warmaster, where you give orders to your units, roll against LD, and if you pass, you can execute one, two, or three moves all in a row. If you fail your LD, then the unit doesn't move, and you can't issue more orders from that commander. There are also blunders when you roll boxcars on LD checks, and your units can do random things.

The game also doesn't get down into the "detail" of WAB with regard to upgrades on units, champs, etc., nor does it really get specific regarding weapons in units. Units have a "clash" value, which is how many dice they roll when they charge into combat, and then a "sustained" which is how many dice are rolled in an ongoing combat.

Also, there is no casualty removal, you accrue wound markers, and after so many the unit is disordered, then broken.

I've played several games and I find it "ok". Could be I'm used to WAB. It depends on what kind of game you want. HC definitely feels and plays more laid-back, as you're not fussing with wheels, reforms, and such like in WAB. They're there, just not as fussy.

Hunt around on The Miniatures Page, or even Warlord's forum to read some AARs, that might give you a better feel for the game.

I found a qrs. Hc reminds me of a really big dba mixed with warmaster.

I'm more fond of warhammer games in general, but it seems wab is very indepth. Which is fine.... unless you are playing 2000+ pts

Hail Caesar seems like a good beer and pretzels game.

Also looking at war and conquest as a wargame.

So far WAB has the money, although not all "barbarians" are identical..... I would die if I saw a German army with chariots.

Were there be dragons....

War and Conquest is a better game then WAB. It is basically WAB 3 but while the way the game is similar the core mechanics are far more relisticly streamlined but still offer the same amount of depth.

Hail Caesar works spectacularly for huge games done in a short time.

War & Conquest is great for smaller, Warhammer sized games. Definitely better than WAB.
