I had asked this question on Warseer, but am curious as to the opinions on this forum. I want to field an IG regiment from a somewhat feudal world and have the basic infantrymen equipped with spears and holstered laspistols, rather than lasguns. All other weapons (meltaguns, flamers, lascannons, etc.) in the army would be represented by their official models.

The troopers would aesthetically have a close-combat weapon and laspistol but would count as regular lasgun-wielding infantry. Some people thought it would be confusing, but there is precedence for this with the previous Warrior Weapon Doctrine and the Kanak Skull-Takers regiment. While the Warrior Weapon Doctrine no longer exists, surely there are other Guard armies out there with such configurations. With all of the other armies out there, such as Genestealer cultists, Squats, etc., I wouldn't think that this wouldn't be all that confusing, but I'd like to get some feedback about this and WYSIWYG (I realize that this is no longer official).

I wouldn't have any problems with playing against army like that as long as special and heavy weapons were clearly recognisable.

It'd be a tad confusing but there are much worse things out there. Maybe convert the spear into a Custodes-style riflespear?

You could take a look at the DKOK rules, which allow basic infantry to switch lasgun for laspistol and CCW, which goes with your theme. The current rules are here:

Although I think the next IA12 is going to redo the DKOK, that is just a guess however.

As for using lp+ccw as normal lasguns, I wouldn't be that bothered. As long as the sergeant who actually has a pistol is obvious.

Would it really be that confusing with only the basic troop type being aesthetically different? There is precedence with the Games-Workshop Karnak Skull-Takers and the old "Warrior Weapon" doctrine from the last codex, which allowed CCW and laspistol.

The Warrior Weapons doctrine actually allowed you to arm the guys with pistol & ccw. It's an exactly opposite precedent, because then if you were modeling it, it was for the express purpose of matching the unit's rules.

If I were doing this I'd either use a set of rules which allowed pistol & CCW (ie: Krieg) or model the guys with spears and lasguns. Not pistols.

I'd allow this, as you must have spent a great deal of time/love/money/etc. doing it. Kudos for not making your army "just another Cadian regiment".

Ignore anyone who gives you grief about it; they probably need to be reminded that this is just a game.
