I just bought some assault marine and I see that GW sells their jump backs as bitz. Can I glue jump packs onto some tactical marines instead of the power packs?

Sure, why not?
I'm sure someone has already done this and has a guide to making everything turn out good. Google around or check out the modeling forum http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/8.page.

They are completely interchangeable, like everything in the plastic marine range.
That said, obviously there won't be any reason to take bolters on jump pack troops, as the only unit that can combine those upgrades is the Blood Angel Death Company.

while 100% true, there is one little detail i might add, every model (well according to 5th/codex space marines) is assumed to be armed with either a bolt pistol and cc weapon or a bolter every unit, so for example you could technically give devastators bolt pistols and cc weapons (the ones without heavy weapons) the reason most don't is because it divides the purpose of said unit. however assault marines wouldn't find a need to be armed as such being assaulty and all. it's not hard to make dynamic poses out of regular tac squads with jump packs, if your good with a mod knife that is.
Note: i am fully aware of the differences in 5th-6th regarding equipment choices etc of a generic space marine

Basically - check your Codex and make sure that the unit you want to give jump packs can actually take jump packs.
They will fit on the Tactical marine models, but for the most part, the weapons the Tactical squad gets aren't available for units that can take jump packs.
There are a few exceptions. Blood Angels Death Company can take bolters, and Honour Guard can take special weapons like flamers, plasma guns or meltaguns.

What? This is not true...
from a gaming POV no your right, from a wargear as printed in the codex it is correct. every entry says if it has a weapon and before the options it'll say the model is armed with counted as being armed with a bolter or a bolt pistol and cc weapon.....i think you need to re-read your codex.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Or did you mean the conversion? either way it is in the last codex which was released for spacemarines, chaos space marines (not latest as in 6th just released was it last month?), ork and several others. read my profile if you will, i am a staunch rulesboy. NOTE: i said it is possible, but most wouldn't ie meaning you can equip certain units with the text that reads "the model counts as either armed with x weapon or y weapon every codex (majority) has that in the weapons and equipment section of unit entry"

You're mistaken. For regular marine units bolters are not interchangeable with pistol/ ccw. Automatically Appended Next Post: For the original question, yes, jump packs fit on regular torsos. However, the assault squad box comes with torsos specifically intended for jump packs, that have extra straps that hold the jump pack on.

Orkimedes, I have no idea what you're on about In 5th ed marine codex (that's what we are talking about, right?) every unit has their wargear clearly listed. Tacticals and devastators have bolter and bolt pistol (no CCW), assault marines have CCW and bolt pistol (no bolter.)

Which I always found odd. Surely the jump pack is just bolted on the armour? Interestingly death company do not have these straps. I assembled my assault marines with strapless torsos, as it is a good opportunity to use different special chest pieces. Tacticals have their arms and bolters in front of them, and their chests are barely visible.
