ive been planning on running 3 ravagers as my heavy support but recently i started thinking about exchanging one for a talos.
is the talos worth losing a ravager?

my list is going to be built around mostly shooting if that makes a difference.

The talos is pretty bad, and any time you have a largely shooty army and you randomly take a dangerous melee element you'll find that it just gets singled out very quickly. It also fights for a spot with one of the best gunboats in the game.

You're basically doing your opponent's job for them, by making any random close-range shooting or melee specialists suddenly effective because you put a melee unit on the field that won't be properly supported.

Talos - to me - are for a very specific build with haemonculi and wracks and grotesques... Same with Chronos engine.

WWP abound. The problem is, can you charge out of a WWP? If so then they are still viable to play. Otherwise they are pretties to assemble an put on your shelf.

If you we're going to take a talos you'd take 2 and a cronos to give them FnP, leaving dark lances to other units

You cannot charge from a WWP.

Talos and ravagers do two completely different things. Both are strong units, and while a ravager is usually strong choice for most DE lists, a talos is a bit more specialized.

Benefits of a ravager are
-3 dark lances
-speed
-mech saturation

This makes a ravager ideal for mech heavy or fast lists

A talos is good for
-Infantry killing(both in shooting/assault. The best build is stock tail gun with TL liquifier or chain flails)
-Being a fire magnet

Not ideal in a mech heavy list, as the slow talos will be ignored and left behind in the backfield. They are nice out of webway portals, as that negates their needing to walk across the board. Even without assaulting out of a portal, they can shoot the turn they arrive, then assault/draw fire. I use a talos in my DE detatchment, because I run 3 wraithlords and a wraithseer, so the talos provides another MC for saturation.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.
