Don't really know...

Just wondering, maybe if there is any Civil war, Revolutionary war, WW2, anything that I could try some Wargaming besides 40k or WarmaHordes, just seem more interested in some history concept.

You would need to find out what's popular in your area or convince a buddy or two to start one together.

Flames of war is the biggest historically themed game - how historical it is is open to debate but that wouldn't really bother me.

If you're convincing buddies to play then I'd recommend the Battle Group series.

If you're not then you've really gotta find out what your potential opponents play.

I know nothing about gaming anything pre-WWII, sorry!

Also, what exactly do you even want to play?

It's not as though there some single Historical ruleset that covers everything. You're going to have to give us some sort of idea of what you want - Ancients, Napoleonics, ACW, WWI, WWII, modern, etc., etc.

You need to be mindful of scale too. Same period could get played in 15mm or 28mm. Best option may be to find a local historical convention & try out a bunch of different games/periods.

I'll just throw this in here as it kind of fits in with the OP's question, does anyone know what the most popular medievil-era ruleset is for 28mm miniatures?

I'm thinking perhaps the 100 years war, or War of the Roses.

Something to use those fantastic Perry WotR miniatures, and Fireforge Games Templars in.

WAB or any of its descendants (Clash of Empires, War & Conquest) should work fine up to the introduction of gunpowder. Hail Caesar plays well for that period also - I've enjoyed many a 1st Crusades game using this system. And there is also Deus Vult from FireForge which covers the Crusades period.

And the ones mentioned above, the excellent Warlord Games rulesets and accompanying miniatures ranges, are just the tip of the iceberg. Unlike GW, which has a slight monopoly, historical gaming is wide open. There are literally hundreds of rulesets to choose from. It just depends what you're looking for.

Clash of Empires has army lists for the Hundred Year Wars, War of the Roses, and for the Crusades as well (so you can get all of your Templar goodies in.

In general terms, Napoleonics, Ancient/Mediaeval and WW2 are the most popular.

A good way to dip your toe in the water is De Bellis Antiquitatis.

Each army is only 12 bases, with one to four models per base. If you play in 15mm a whole army with optional bases will only cost about £30 to £40.

Check this site for more info. The WADBAG explanation of the DBA rulebook is very useful.

You can download the first edition rules for free here...

The second edition is OOP and a 3rd edition is supposedly nearly ready to be published.

Actually, I believe DBA 2.2 is up on Lulu as a book.

Deus Vult as mentioned is a great game, and very good looking models it must be said.

Good find!

Admittedly the price has gone up a bit. I think my A5 B&W v2.2 cost £3. However you get colour and a bunch of extra stuff included.

The reviews about the game are mostly bad to say it gentle and the models are bulky and not historically accurate so I wont say they are good looking except you like the non historically accurate and bulky style.

Yours is the first negative review of the FireForge products that I've seen. The Deus Vult rules read as an adequate to good game which a few additional touches in the pre-game to make it different from many of the other games on the market. The Teutonic Knights are trim & might actually be a bit small without their capes adding volume to the silhouette. The figures are accurate enough for 1250-1350, especially if the parade ground helmet antlers are removed.

I have had a quick look at the FireForge web page, I did not know that anyone was doing 28mm Mediaevals except for the Perry Brothers.

The Templars cavalry set is €25 for 12 models, which certainly is not expensive for 28mm figures.

The figures look fine to me. I'm not going to rush off to my "Armies and Enemies of the Crusades" to check for historical detail. They should do for most western European feudal armies of the 13th century.
