I currently have a 2000 point space marine army and am hoping to start a small 500 point army for short games.

I want something different from what i have in both fluff and game play so for me that rules imperial guard, any other space marine armies including chaos.

Hoping for some suggestions thanks.

Daemons are vastly different from SM. They are also interesting to paint (compared to power armour).

Personally, I really really like DE. The models are cool looking and the rules are pretty simple to learn.

Of course, you better keep them in cover and moving quickly in order for them to stay alive though...

You could always go Nids. They're hilarious and the models are neat.

And if you're particularly talented, you can sculpt your Hive Tyrant to look like a Queen from Alien

Exactly what I have done, I have around 30k points of marines in 7 months so wanted a change so I started the new daemons and currently have around 2,250pts worth (3 DP's, LoC soulgrindr, 3 heralds and 60 horrors), I have painted them in quite bright colours, a lot more interesting then black marines with red shoulder pads and shin pads!. Hopefully my painting skills will improve as well

30k points of marines in 7 months?! Tell me thats not your personal collection.
I dread to think how much that has set you back

Get the old daemons battleforce, and you have a 500 point army, with everything you need. (19 bloodletters and a herald HQ), 10 daemonettes , 10 pink horrors.

This will add up to 500 points depending on what upgrades you give the herald.

He sounds like the guy who did the entire DA chapter in 3-4 months, NIB to painted, including vehicles and a pair of thunderhawks. Had a really nice warhound too. OT, nids are also interesting, but not as colorful as the DE are

Not that it matters because given the amount of interbreeding that went on with that lot I'm pretty sure the Queen is her own Uncle.
