Greetings,

To start off, I'd like to state that I"m totally new to this game. So far, my experience is limited to some batreps found within youtube, and to watching a few games from my local hobby store. I've whittled down my choices to Trollbloods due to percieved playstyle, model selection, and fluff.

As of now, I want to start a list based off of Grim Angus. The themed army seems like a good place to start, but I was wondering if you guys have been successful with it.

I do plan on buy the majority of the Trollblood range, so I don't plan to pigeon hole myself with just one type of list....thus...here are some supplemental questions.

I haven't seen too many batreps with Gunnbjorn, so...is he even viable as a warlock choice? I guess he's lower tier, but the model is pretty damn cool, and I was wondering if you guys could share a successful list based around this character. In addition...I really like the idea of the Swamp Troll, but yet again, I really didn't see too much of this guy on Youtube. I'm pretty sure that there's better options available, but the idea of running him with Grim just...i don't know....seems right. I'm not basing this conclusion on game play mechanics, but rather, how I perceive the characters/models themselves. To me, Grim kinda reminds me of a character that one would see in a movie like...The Rescuers (the older swampy version/not the Australian one)...and so does this particular troll. To me, they just go together...like peas and carrots....so could this combo be successful?

Finally, I know that I'm gonna eventually get a unit of scattergunners or sluggers....I can't get over how cool they look (barnyard commandos anyone...but more weird?), but which unit would fit better in a Grim based list (for the times that i don't run the themed based list). Who should I purchase first?

So...in review...I plan on starting with Grim, eventually broadening my horizons with the other casters. Gunnbjorn looks cool, as does a list centered on Calandra. I have to admit that I like to use armies that aren't popular, even if they're not the most efficient. However...I don't know who's popular...and who's not!.

If you've made it this far in this post, thank you for your time. I look forward to learning from your own experiences/wisdom.

Grim is actually a melee caster. He likes to get his models into combat as safely as possible. Grim lowers their defense and keeps them in position. He likes to alpha strike.

Sluggers are fantastic with Gunny. Gunny is a caster that loves to stay back and shoot the enemy down. His tier (theme) list works well for him up to tier 3, with 4 not being too good for standard play. You're gonna want a Dire Troll Bomber to pair with Gunny. After that, stick to his tier list and you'll be fine.

Just remember the game is more about the player than the army, usually. It doesn't look like you are trying to fool yourself with asking how to be good nationally on a forum

Trolls are a little underplayed, and those that play trolls gravitate towards tough lists, not really shooty ones.

So:
Bjorn: his bazooka is nasty, always boost to hit for the crit
15/16 is a fairly tough caster, he should be 17/16 most of the time since he can create walls
Being able to drop a wall is AWESOME, remember that models can't stop their movement on top of a wall, meaning you can use it to give +def, and also prevent charges from pathfinder models if they can't be placed

I dont play trolls, but my main opponent(s) do, so from that experience.
-Scattergunners are awesome, especially with UA, especially especially when you have fenblades or something in front to stop them from reaching your scattergunners

-The smaller/more expensive gunner unit with the machineguns: I'm not sure if they are any good, they usually fail to do anything against me and rarely get to stand still for the d3 shots per guy.

I'm not a fan of Gunnbjorn, if all the troll casters I've played against he seems like the one most likely to be driven to the battlefield on the short bus.

His feat does nothing against melee forces, and he has a whole bunch of abilities trolls can get anywhere.

If I was gonna run a troll ranged force I'd wanna wait for eGrim personally.

One of Gunny's spells grants either boosted attack rolls or an additional die on ranged attack rolls to his battlegroup, and he's part of his battlegroup so he get's to benefit for a few fury. The wall would give him +4 def against range, so quite hard to hit. Enjoy your time with Gunny!

Where else can Trolls get snipe for a unit?

Dont be discouraged that Swamps may not be too popular, they can be quite good in the right situations

Especially since they're the cheapest beast trolls have! Thats why I like rolling with one occasionally

Well, tied for cheapest aren't they?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Thanks for the replies guys. What are your impressions on the Storm Troll? The model is so freakin awesome. I'm reading the rules for disruption, but until I get some more game experience...I'm not sure how effective this ability is. A good portion of my local community use the steam jack factions.

In addition, what's the community opinion concerning conversions? Is this a faux pas?

Storm troll isn't bad. He won't live long if you use him as a warjack soak. I don't seem him as otherwise useful. His fists either have critical disruption or disruption, and so not that bad for those. If you like the model, go for it.

I imagine that it'd be useful against warmachine in an army with a beatstick like Mulg. Say there are two really heavy jacks on the opponent's side, throw Mulg at 1 and the storm troll at the other. Mulg trashes his, storm troll disrupts his and stops it killing Mulg, then Mulg kills that one in your next turn.

Something like that maybe?

That works. You have to be willing to let it die against warjacks though. Obviously don't kill it, but don't be upset if it does meet Dhunia.

Well in the situation I described you'd be effectively trading a Storm Troll for 2 enemy warjacks. Seems alright to me.
