So, I recently picked up IG as a new army. I was interested in getting something to give me some sort of psyker defense as there are a lot psyker armies in my club - most notably a DE/Eldar player and a Daemon player. I tried allying with SW and took a RP to give me a 4+ 24" shield against psykers which seemed really good until I played against Eldrad in one game and daemons in another. Eldrad made it impossible for me to get off anything while he was just fine and the daemon army was primarily using blessings like iron arm on an unclean one (was T9 most of the game) the whole time - in the end he turned my RP into some sort of daemon due to to the unclean one killing off several of my dudes...need to read the daemon codex more...

My games are at around 1850 and I'm thinking about adding some serious cheese to my list but at a great cost. I'm thinking of allying with Eldar to get at Eldrad (and a handful of rangers). Daemons having to roll on 3d6 for all of their powers would be a huge help. And the other Eldrad player relies heavily on his psyker powers. In my IG list I'm running a sky shield with some artillery sitting on top - possibly another noob IG move - we'll see. I've had a couple of instances where I've lost tanks to lascannons that could ignore cover when I was running an ADL so I want to see how a 4+/4+ works for me. Anyway I was going to let Eldrad sit up there with his 5 ranger-meat-shield. He can't cast on the IG units but maybe he could do something for the rangers - beyond what he would normally do to GK, Eldar, SW and daemons.

Any other/better suggestions on how to shut down psyker armies would be greatly appreciated.

Eldar allies,is the only way to have a blanket psychic defense.

Guns are a fairly reliable psychic defense. They can't use their powers if they've been blasted off the table. Lol all jokes aside, I've been having a similar problem. I had success with a basilisk, or similar barrage weapon. Center the blast on the offending psyker's head, and with enough hits you could instakill it.

Try that with a 6 wound T9 unclean one who's barreling down the table at you. My three vendettas could barely scratch him. I had to throw PISs at him to slow him down.

Eldar Farseer with Runes of Warding onna bike with doom and some Guardians on bikes with catapults.
The runes of warding make all enemy casters roll 3D6 for powers with perils on >=12 regardless of range.

If playing foot guard you should be able to use your blob & ADL to boost that unit's cover save and it shouldn't usually get into close combat due to "lol jetbike".

What type of list do you normally run?

What about using a few snipers?

Hit on Ballistic Skill (usually a 4 to hit) but veterans in the company command squad only need a 3.

A to hit roll of 6 allows a Precision Shot (pick the model in the target unit that is hit - HELLO ELDRAD)

Wound on a 4+ regardless of enemy toughness. A roll to wound of a 6 is a Rending attack which wounds and is AP2.

Don't forget to use orders from a Company Commander as well since Bring it Down and Fire on my Target may come in handy.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

I agree with the just kill them strategy.

If you can't handle a GUO, then that's something wrong with your killing power, not a problem with your inability to handle psychics.

Why didn't you just slowly walk away from him. He has a six inch move.

Also, shooting psykers is cool. GK allies also work.

That's all well and good, but eldrad has a 3+ invul so he doesn't tend to care what ap you are throwing at him, plus he could just switch it off on a 2+.

In general if you are looking for the cheapest(point wise) psy defence, just a reg farseer with ROW,1 power, and 5 rangers for around 185 points. You can hide them where no one can see them and the farseer causes all psy tests to be 3d6, and if they add to 12+ a perils. Eldrad just on his own is 210, plus a troops choice to allow you access to him means you are up over 300 easy. Either work for what you are looking for, it all depends on how much room you have, and what you want your psy defence to do when they aren't screwing up other psykers.

Against MEQ psykers, the bassie idea is always a plus. With eldred he's still an elder so I love the good ol las gun. Actually getting to wound on 4s means tons of saves to make, and will fail at the worst 1 in 6. Which is why he is my chimeras multi lasers favorite target, not eternal warrior.

Against other demons, OotF and hope they don't arrive. GUO, treat like a ridiculously slow land raider.
Guard Psykers make for a good psykic defense, PBS plus PP means a ton of wounds on any independant model or squad with no armor saves. (even if the psker survives due to squad size, they'll still be crappy LD for the panic check.

Sargent! Bring me my brown pants!
