Hi,
does one of you have a list of the paints from the Vallejo range for the tau sept scheme?

Update so far:
white scar - dead white 001
tau light ochre - filthy brown 037
rhinox hide - charred brown 045
xv-88 - leather brown 040
ungor flesh - bronze fleshtone 036 (or model color 70.804 Beige Red)
balor brown - heavy ochre 150
agrax earthshade - umber shade wash 73203

there is an up to date color conversion chart on the vallejo website, and the one here on dakka may need updating:

So that would be:

white scar - dead white 001
tau light ochre - filthy brown 037
rhinox hide - charred brown 045
xv-88 - ??
ungor flesh - ??
balor brown - heavy ochre 150
agrax earthshade - umber shade wash 73203

Maybe I should ask this in a few weeks time.

Can I ask why you are strictly devoted to Vallejo? I personally would never devote myself to one paint line, there are things that Vallejo doesn't make that Citadel does and vice versa, I Tend to buy the colors I want from both manufacturers and have it over with.

I'm asking for Vallejo, 'cause I have a large assortment of their paints. It would be wasteful to not use them, also I have positive experience with them, especially when airbrushing.
I'm not devoted to their line and also own P3, Cot d'Arms and W&N paints.

And from what it says in this month's WD, the armour colours can vary depending on battleground. It's the MARKING colours that are important!

Page 126, Paint splatter. (Emphasis mine.

"You can always recognise a Tau by the colour of it's sept markings, which is unique to their home world. these geometric shapes (often represented as vertical lines) are a great way to differentiate between units and ranks. White Scar is the sept colour of warriors from T'au."

And from further on "..they are all from Bork'an, as indicated by their Sotek Green sept markings."

"The mysterious Tau of N'dras use Abbadon Black as their sept colour.", and "Warriors from Sa'cea have sept markings painted in Troll slayer Orange.", so you don't have to match every single colour on a model to make it recognisable as from a particular sept. Use whatever looks good to you, and if you have to get GW paints, then at least you only have to do so for the sept markings. Other than that, I look forward to seeing what you come up with ........ and enjoy those Vallejo colours!

It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes…then all of this…all of this…was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars." You know, saying that I can take whatever I want, is a bit weird as an answer to a color matching question. "Tau sept" the color scheme, has nothing to do with fluff / combat cammo, it is the orange / ochre / dark brown that is archetypal for Tau.

No, I was saying that the colourt match does not have to be identical. On the page of the WD I was quoting, they use 2 different orange / ochre / dark brown schemes for the T'au sept. You obviously read more into the additional quotes I used to add to the fact that septs are identified by the colour of their sept markings, not the exact colour of their armour. The only thing that is definate was the white for the T'au sept markings. So you can eyeball the nearest Vallejo colours and still be correct., I was not trying to say you can paint it green as it was quite clear that you wanted to go for that classic Tau look. Mixing custom colours should also not be that hard if you still can't get close enough with out of the bottle Vallejo colours.

I was only trying to help, and let you know that GW themselves have already given a reason for tonal variations so that if you don't get the exact shade that you would if you actually used "XV-88" and "Tau Light Ochre" then it's no big deal. I was replying to a colour matching question by stating that you don't need to get it colour matched to a Pantone Colour Reference.
