Even after the influx of regiments to the front line the advance had again been stalled. Command decided that a second front should be opened up on the planet. In all their infinite wisdom they decided it should be opened up on the chaos held capital city. The city was heavily fortified and occupied by the enemy’s best troops. Lieutenant Callum looked at the paper and pencil he was taken notes with. It occurred to him that the collective IQ of the pencil and all the sheets of paper was probably higher than the officers in high command. All the same his was to do and die and not question why. He refocused on the captain’s briefing.
The 51st is being redeployed to help open up the second front, A, B, and C Companies have been tasked with taking the space port in order to allow for the rapid deployment of more troops. C Company will have the honor of taking the command and radar centers from the heart of the space port. We’ll be deployed just outside the space port and we’ll use our armor to clear a path and we’ll have round the clock vendetta support. Understood? Dismissed.
The landings went well enough. Most of the enemy AA fire focused on the assault closer to the city so what little that actually lit up C company’s landers did superficial damage. The armor proceeded forward until the objective was in sight then stopped to check for enemy positions. 1st platoon command squad moved to a nearby landing pad. Their mission was to be the eyes and ears of the company using their sniper rifles and range finders they picked out enemy positions.

This is Lieutenant Angus we’ve spotted the enemy and are marking targets.

Roger that Angus. All elements this is lead, form up and move out.

Target priority is on the chariots; all elements hit them with everything you’ve got.
Lead this is executioner
Sunburn what about the enemies on the left flank?
Ignore them
Sunburn we have time to deal with the chariots while they move into position.
Callum opened up the top hatch of his chimera to get a better look at the target and watched in awe as the company fired as almost a single entity at the chariots. With firepower like that who could stand in the way of the Imperial Guard? But as the dust settled his heart sank. The chariots had only suffered light damage and only a few of the mounts lay dead but those remaining would be more than enough to get the job done.
Those are the target men hit them with your plasma guns see if you can finish them.
His specialists stood up and took aim. Two bolts of plasma flew down range and landed just short of the target. The third plasma bolt never left the weapon. Being a veteran of many campaigns Callum knew why. So did his specialists. They all dove for cover as a flash of bright light enveloped the new guy who had held the trigger to long. Callum punched the inside of the chimera in anger at having lost a man and not doing any damage in return. He stood back up to observe the enemy reaction.

This is the Captain to all elements, the enemy moved faster than I expected all units are free to engage at will.

Who the hell taught you idiots about formations? Never mind just don’t let that demon prince anywhere near us.
This is Blue leader to ground elements, air support inbound.

Sometimes Callum wondered if the navy only recruited monkeys to be pilots because the way these vendettas arrived left him utterly dumbfounded. They came low and fast dodging structures left and right then fired the most useless laser volley he had ever seen. The volley hadn’t been in vain. He saw a demon prince tumble onto the roof of a building. The demolisher on his left paid no heed and fired at the chariots. It’s main gun shook the tank and threw the heavy bolters aim but still it fired a burst
and hit
every shot.
Meanwhile 2nd platoon brought all its weapons to bear on the demon prince and wiped it from the face of the earth.

The second demolisher decided its guns were need against the chariots and fired a luck shell that detonated both chariots and took some nearby demons with it.

Sergeant Lister stood in his chimera watching the ugliest walker he had ever seen come around the corner of a building. He quickly had his specialists take pot shots with their melta. One missed and the other was deflected by foul chaos energy. It came closer.
SHHHHHAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZUUUUUUU!!!!!!
Lister looked to his left as a demon… cow? A demon cow? A demon cow was charging his vehicle? Suddenly he was falling. The cow like entity had picked up the chimera spilling out the veterans inside and proceeded to used foul warp magic to obliterate from existence.

The enemy was on them. Every unit was functioning at full power to counter the sudden arrival of the cow and war machine in their midst.
Driver
Yes Lieutenant?
2nd platoon can deal with these sluts in front of us move towards the objective.

The Vendetta pilots were up to their monkey antics and executed a low altitude sweep behind the enemy to line up on the cow. It was time to cook some beef.

Desperate to help Lister’s squad Steel Wall and Sunburn fired on the demon engine.
Lister stood with his men firing at the cow finally dropping it a meltagun blast to the head when a demolisher shell exploded next to them. He regained his senses and looked at his men, four more dead and his luck still wasn’t holding. A small sun landed right next to him killing him and his melta specialists. Refusing to retreat and avenge their leader the last three men prepare to fight to the last.

Callum continued his advance toward the objective taking no heed of the encroaching danger.

Unused to the capabilities of demons the pilots of the vendettas could only watch in horror as they leapt from the ground to latch on to any handhold they could find.

Blue 1 hit the throttle as hard as he could to get away.

The air around Callum felt wrong as though something unholy was happening around the chimera. One of the crewmen began to speak to him.
lieutenant our weapon systems are down and our tracks are shot, this vehicle isn’t going anywhere soon sir.
Very well. Squad dismount, were on foot from here.

As soon as they got out they were set upon by two shrieking demons.
Somebody throw jewelry and chocolate at them. Maybe they’ll calm down but for the sake of the emperor DO NOT ask them about their day! You’ll be stuck there all day and we won’t accomplish our objectives.

The men in his squad flailed their arms and knives trying to fight the quick little skanks. Callum hit one in the head with his pistol and then collapsed in exhaustion along with some of his other men.

A lucky melta shot from the 2nd platoon’s 2nd squad finally exploded the chaos engine leaving all guns available to fire on the demons caught in the open, and fire they did.

A cloud formation began to form and move over the space port. One of the recon men was the first to spot it and pointed it out to Angus.
What do you think it is sir?
I don’t know Private.
The clouds let loose a thunderous volley of energy strikes on the Lieutenants squad killing them all.

Lieutenant Callum after having caught his breath went back to his duty.
C’mon men this control post isn’t going to take itself.

This is Callum I’m moving into the control bunker.
Roger Callum the rest of the company will proceed with mop up.

Lachlan’s and another chimera moved up flaming as they went following the enemy squad til there was one left.

The demon vanished in a flash of light returning to the war to regroup with its fallen comrades.
All units the space port is secure form a defensive perimeter around the landing pads and dig in. Reinforcements will arrive within the hour so that we can continue our push to the next objective.
What is the new objective Captain?
The wall

Interesting. This battle report style sort of reminds me of my 5th ed work - a combination of fluff and description - but using close-in shots rather than diagrams.

I think you did a well enough job explaining what happened in a followable way. It will be interesting to see if you can add some flavor to the fluff.

Congrats on the win. I can't imagine I'd want to be the pilot of a hovering vendetta with rending claws around...

Thats something i don't quite get about the rules. Why do units just sit there and allow themselves to be charged? Is everyone in the future just so dumb that they sit there and say something like
"well, here comes a squad of some nasty close combat troops, our chance of hurting them is narrow to nonexistent but lets sit here and let them charge us anyway"

Hrrmmm? General Ian? Might I ask what you meant by that exactly? On a side note, I must admit I enjoy your batreps quite a bit (I'm a sucker for some fluff in batreps).

here is an example from a recent game.

Guard squad's chimera explodes and some how most of them survive. Next turn this T7 nurgle MC with iron arm bumps his toughness to 10 and charges the guard squad. There is no way these guys can hurt a T10 MC except with their one melta gun in overwatch. It had full wounds so the melta if it hit would not have slowed it down. Which is where i ask who in their right mind would stand in a crater and let this huge demonic entity actually get into hand to hand with them knowing whatever weapon they had would not even scratch it?

Ha ha. That's quite the truth! I presume it is the same reason that you have to roll for charge distance. Oh so the enemy is slow and purposeful? You are only 3 feet away (3 inches). Go on! Just clob those guys that can't overwatch (which really doesn't make sense either. Heck, to be honest... why don't Thouasand Sons not get to overwatch?). Oh whoops we only decided to move 2 feet and then 1 foot away we ran away.....

In the end though... I'm honestly conflicted over the additions of overwatch, random charge distance, and challenges. Part of me enjoys the realistic touch (and the fact that it makes the troops seem a bit more competent than not shooting at all) but another part of me feels that it is just another nail in the coffin that is assault.

Regardless, I looked up some of your other batreps and I quite enjoyed them. I wish your Imperial Guardsman victory against all of the heretics, xenos, and witches!
