So from what I know the blood angels are doomed for eternity by the flaw in their gene seed known as the black rage/red thirst and the priests are trying to cure it. So my questions are, was sanguinius born with the flaw or was it when he went into the warp? And why don't people like Dante or corbulo even astaroth succumb to it's effects. We also know Mephiston conquered the rage and slashed lots of orks (D' and lemartes is very much about to go crazy. On a couple of side notes is the saguinor a blood angel so can he become a black rager and who is this sanctions you speak of :p
One very last thing. WHY WHY did captain Tycho have to die

You fool me once I'm mad.
You fool me twice, I don't really like you.
You fool me three times, your officially that guy.

IIRC red thirst is gene flaw - black rage is inherited psychotrauma....

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Once it was because they had to use some of Sanguinius' blood after his death.
For a period it was because of some resonance effect of Sanguinius' death.
Currently it is a flaw that was inherent to their geneseed.

Who knows what GW thinks up next?

Last I heard it(black rage) was a psychic echo of sanguinus from the time of the legion. They felt his death so strong it was etched into their mind as if they were there and the memory perm innately encoded in their gene-seed via genetic memory. red thirst though is a mutation I believe.

Not that it matters because given the amount of interbreeding that went on with that lot I'm pretty sure the Queen is her own Uncle.

Red Thirst was starting to appear more and more during the Great Crusade, Black Rage is the psychic echo of Sanguinius' death at the hands of Horus.

Red Thirst is a bloodlust that comes upon them during battle, marines with exceptional willpower are usually able to suppress it, which is why marines like Dante are rarely if ever seen in this state.

The Black Rage is far more unpredictable, they don't really know what brings it on and although Astorath seems to be able to tell who will fall next, they have little to no warning. Eventually, even Dante himself will fall to the Black Rage if he doesn't fall in battle first.

I've suspected for a while now that the curses have nothing to do with gene-seed and everything to do with the fact that their Aspirants drink a tiny portion of Sanguinius' blood to initiate the change into Astartes. His blood itself is psychically charged, and this could account for the Black Rage. Also, the Red Thirst may have been a mutation in Sanguinius himself from his time spent in the warp that he passes on through his blood. The original Blood Angels were made through traditional gene-seed methods before Sanguinius was found, and so they were clean. As the Great Crusade continued more and more of the legion's ranks were filled by those who underwent the blood drinking ceremony and consequently the cases of Red Thirst went up. Obviously this is all speculation on my part, but that's my take on the subject.

EDIT: Tycho's death was tragic, but that is what makes it great in my opinion. I tip my hat to Lynata for directing me to this incredible short story regarding his death, which I now in turn direct you to.

The red thirst is a flaw in the gene-seed. Originally it was caused the practice of exsanguination; implanting a part of Sanguinus' blood into every new recruit. it was theorized that over the millennia the blood had decayed and mutated. Now it seems it was always a part of Sanguinius and was always going to be passed on to the Blood Angels.

The Black Rage is from Sanguinus' death at the hands of Horus. The Blood Angels feel the psychic echo of their primarch's death and go into a catatonic rage.

As to the Sanguinor, well we don't actually know what he is. he could be an ancient Blood Angel, or more likely in my opinion, a supernatural phenomenon.
