Embarked in a vehicle is a squad, all the same toughness, but various armor saves. The vehicle explodes, X number of wounds happen. How are wounds allocated? How are armor saves rolled?

Random allocation. The model the wound is allocated to takes the armour save.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Is this in the rulebook somewhere? I couldn't find it when I looked earlier.

He's incorrect. Per page 80 it works like shooting (so resolution one at a time), but the controlling player allocates them where he likes. So if you've got a squad with mixed armor saves, you can take them one at a time on the guys with better saves until they're dead, then put any remaining wounds on the guys with worse saves.

Interesting. So in the case of poor armor save (5+ or 6+) troops in a transport with a 2+ save HQ, the saves can be taken on the HQ who will likely not fail more than 1, then all the mooks won't die in the explosion?

Yup. Of course, any failed saves are wounds on your character.

And that is what I get for posting at work without checking the rulebook first.
