I have been playing Space Wolves for several months now and I have been noticing a problem. The problem being getting up to the enemy before getting shot to pieces. I play against a lot of IG and Eldar, and I just get lanced to death and shot up. I have been normally taking rhinos and packing my Grey Hunters in them and having Long Fangs to break up some of the enemy's armor. Should I use more drop pods or even a land raider? Or is there a certain way to advance the rhinos up with taking minimal damage. Any advice would be appreciated.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

Drop pods are the answer. The fact that you can drop a full squad of units of and light your opponent up at max strength is a steal! I would run all pods if anything.

Whats your whole list look like?

Normally it's anywhere between 2-3 rhinos with Grey Hunters and a Wolf Guard with them and a Rune Priest as the HQ. The bigger the games go the more problems I have with the rhinos not even making it up the board.

How many points are you doing? I'm finding that you generally need around 5-6 squads of Grey Hunters and 3 squads of Long Fangs.

The max I have ever done was 1850 and I didn't go the best due to lack of models. I only have one squad of Long Fangs and I plan on getting more. What would you recommend for the squads of Grey Hunters? Should I run them full 10 man squads or break them up a bit. Recently I have been doing:

Grey Hunter Squad
Wolf Guard Powerfist and Combi-melta or plasma
7 x Hunters
Melta
Wulfen
Standard
Rhino

Probably not the best but I'm still rather new to Space Wolves.

But what do you usually play?

Your wolf guard is a horrible weak link there. Way too expensive! 33pts for something that dies like a marine isn't worth it (especially as for 4pts more you get 2+ 5++ and a power weapon instead of the fist, plus that delicious rerollable 2+ save the turn you use your standard).
Why not consider just plain GH squad rather than putting wolf guard in? I find the 10 man squads to be most effective - especially with that free weapon. You can start to do other more nuanced tactics once you get the feel for SW in general. Wolf guard are very expensive for their points, use them sparingly. There are some great uses for them - the suicide melta or the TDAWG pack leader to absorb challenges for an attached IC. You don't have to take them...so don't unless you feel they're the linchpin of your list (they're not).

I also agree with the other posters that drop pods are better. Rhinos tend to get blown up, leaving you clustered up in the open or in 5+ cover. Drop pods get you there instantaneously.

Remember: space wolves aren't a CC army. They're a mid to short range army. Get up in your opponents face with guns, but save assault for the easy targets.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Should have said that differently. That is what I have been going with as far as the Grey Hunters go. I do see your point about the Wolf Guard being expensive. So the best thing to do is full squad of Grey Hunters and drop pod them in? The only fear I have is the Eldar player I go against a lot. He loves to spam lances and he puts them on anything he can get his hands on.

Eldar will ALWAYS out-maneuver you. You can't beat it... so don't try. What you need to do is focus on objectives. Firmly secure your objectives and force him to pry you off. Don't play his game, make him play yours.

I generally do 8-10 Grey Hunters in a Rhino with Meltagun/Mark of the Wulfen/Wolf Standard/Rhino. If you're running 10, double-up on the special weapons obviously. I like taking Wolf Guard pack leaders as well, although ymmv.

I figured that out quick that Eldar are much faster, but it's the lance spam that always gets me. Sure I can sit on the objective but he will slowly dwindle my guys down. But thing I have done was have the rhino block line of sight to give me some cover. Than there is the flyer issue. Would sticking Long Fangs on a Aegis Defense Line be good? It's cheap and gives them a good cover.

I do the same thing with my Rhinos. Pro-tip: You can actually have your Grey Hunters rapid fire at a unit and then Flat Out with the Rhino to block them from getting shot at.

For the Flyers, yeah an ADL with Long Fangs would probably be good.

You mean I can disembark the Grey Hunters, shoot the rapid fire, and then move the rhino flat out? If this is true you are a genius.

Yup, that's how it works. It's a nice little trick Rhinos can pull.

I prefer 5 man GH squads with melta and motwr in a razorback. Add a combi-melta WG. I take at least 3 of these and a 8 man squad in a rhino with WG and RP.

My other questions is, how good are Land Speeders? Or the Vindicators?

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

Both are sub standard at this point. Vindi's have never been good. Speeders were great in 5th, but took it hard along with most other mech in 6th. Rhinos really took it hard, but to tell you the truth, they were just to damn good for 35pts in 5th. I feel they are almost appropriately costed now in 6th.

I think I'm getting an idea on how to build a list.

I dunno, Vindicators are actually pretty useful if you take 2-3 of them.

Side armor way to low. Has been. Will be. To many aegis def lines out there.

This, plus Long Fangs are too good. The only appropriate replacement for LFs (going SW only) are Hyperios Platforms. And since those are FA, you could run both.

Flat out is basically a "run" move in the shooting phase for tanks. Differnt tanks go different speeds. I'd give specifics but i dont have my BRB, my buddy does
