I have attempted to paint my ork bases with scorched brown, bestial brown and then a highlight of bleached bone, but it does not look to good . Does anyone have a way to paint bases that makes it look like a desert or dirt terrain? Pictures would be good. Thanks in advance!

What I do is glue down some sand and then paint it with a dark brown latex paint. once it dries I dry brush it with a light tan color. I hope this helps some

GW has come out with some 'texture" paints. I believe there is a desert one. I haven't used them but I've seen several good reviews of them.

Don't highlight bases unless there's a surface on it that justifies a highlight (rocks/metal panels/dead soldier). For a desert base, glue some sand or flat cork (pretty flat, if it's too thick it'll look like a stone) onto it, prime, then undercoat it with a tan colour like bubonic brown (zamesi desert in the new range) or tausept ochre (balor brown in the new range), drybrush bleached bone (ushabti bone new) over it, and then wash with either sepia or earthshade. Re highlight with the bone if you wish. Line it with scorched brown (rhinox hide new) or tausept (balor). Bish bash bosh, desert base!

EDIT: As Phydox said you could also use GW's texture paint instead. Highlight as you wish. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat800008a&prodId=prod1500276a

NOTE: This is just for GW paints, but you can use the Dakka Dakka PAINT RANGE COMPATABILITY CHART! to use with any other paint range. Chart found here.

I followed your advise and came up with a desert scheme that looks pretty good, using a tamiya paint:

-basecoat bestial brown
- glue sand
- desert yellow ( tamiya acrylic colour)
- dry brush bleached bone
- wash with Devlan mud

Thanks for your help guys, sorry about the old paints.

I still use all old paints xP

No reason to go buy all new paints because it has a new fancy name.

Old paints are much better IMO, I still have some of them. Unfortunately they aren't really Ork colours because I used to play 'nids, so I had to buy the new ones. Coat d'Arms still makes the old paints though, so I'll probably check them out when I start making orders.

EDIT: Magen, you should put the sand on the bases first and then prime them, as painting the sand itself is a much better effect. But that's just IMO, so forget it.
