I played a game last night with IG vs CSM and just won it with such ease. I'm wondering if perhaps I did something wrong which gave me some massive advantage?

It was about 875 points each side. I had a flamer pcs in a chimera, a melta ccs in a chimera, plasmavets in a chimera, 2x10 infantry with an autocannon each and a lord commissar. My opponent had 3x10 ranged cultists, 6 chosen from dark vengeance and the lord, and the helbrute. All infantry had the mark of nurgle.

The Chaos just died in droves. When the flamer ccs chimera came up to a building with a cultist squad they were wiped out in that turn, turn by turn. Are Chaos cultists just that bad?

All I lost was a chimera and all of the veterans inside because the chosen charged it and charged the vets the subsequent turn. I know if the chosen got near a chimera it would die but they never did. The helbrute seemed to die too fast. It feels so lackluster.

I just felt mean after that fight. I want my guys to die, they are imperial guard they are meant to. Something feels wrong if my men are not going down in droves lol.

What do Chaos players need to be competitive against Imperial Guard?

From the sounds of it, this CSM player didn't have enough heavy weaponry to pop your armored fist transports, which kept your guys safe from possibly a CC-centric army. What else did he have on the table, what did the helbrute have, did he have any heavy weapons?

The smaller the game the higher chance one side will be totally outmatched by something it can't face.

Cultists aren't bad - massed flamers are good against them. You brought vehicles and the CSM weren't prepared for it, having too few heavy guns to take them out.

Not exactly a super balanced match up there. Cultists are chaff (similar stat-line to guardsmen) so it's not really surprising they die in droves to a group with mass flamers. If he'd had a hell-drake it would have been a completely different story.

That makes sense. They only had a helbrute with a multimelta and power fist, chosen which could just destroy anything of mine in CC.

It just felt like I was playing against 100 points

Yes cultists are that bad. they are to snatch objectives unless you take tons of them you can use them as a tar pit. the CSM player was not equipped to deal with your army and will probably lose a lot of games. a couple of oblits or havocs and bezerkers and this would have been a tougher fight.

What can I do to make an easier match for my opponent? I have a lot to work with but that's basically all they have. Remove all flamers and chimeras.. maybe add some stormtroopers instead?

Your opponent needs to buy more stuff. He mostly got the starter set stuff for Chaos and Chaos is given a massive disadvantage in the starter.

Basically you played against a terrible list and someone who was most likely a new player.

Don't. Make him play better instead, and have him pick up a some units that can help with vehicles. Or lend him some of your IG to use as allies and have a bigger game.

Yeah, others have gotten the gist of it. Either you need to show up with only stuff that your opponent is capable of killing, or you need to get your opponent stuff that is capable of killing what you want to field.

Don't be afraid to take on some pretty serious handicaps. Games tend not to be fun (for either player, really) when it's a complete one-sided slaughter.

He can get some...

Plague Marines
Noise Marines
Heldrakes
Havocs
Oblits
Karn and some Khorne Marines (NOT ZERKERS!)

Any of those will help get the job done against you. Melta chosen in a rhino would be helpful, too. If he can pop your transports, Noise Marines SHRED IG. What cover save? Now eat hot raging

Khorne Marines ( not zerkers?) I would take the Zerkers outright since they automatically have FC without having to buy them the silly icon (detrimental) AND they have the option to buy chain axes =/

Simply tell him to buy 1 Heldrake. Or get him to fill out a heavy support slot with a Defiler. Cheap Defilers are sold on Ebay all the time for 25-40$

Yes, they are that bad, pretty much one of the most worthless units ive seen. Their points cost should be divided in half considering what trash they are.

cultists should get out and go fight zombies in warhammer fantasy. it can be the ultimate battle of useless units.

Well, cultists aren't bad if you use them like gretchin. That is, take a smallish unit, minimal kit, and put them on an objective far from the fighting. They can hold a patch of ground while the rest of your army takes the fight to the enemy. They can soak up a decent bit of enemy fire (keep them in cover and go to ground when something so much as looks at em funny), and if your opponent commits something to killing them that can actually do the job, it's distracting one of his actually decent units from holding off your assault.

That said, they are garbage if the idea is to use them as the core of your army. I'd recommend letting your opponent proxy them as some sort of actual Chaos Marines. That way he can preview some better units and decide what he wants to collect next (I'm assuming he's on a tight gaming budget). The stuff you're fielding is just a decently balanced Guard force, not some uber cheese list, so the focus should be on getting his list up to yours' level rather than vice versa.

Let him proxy an ADL with Quadgun and some havocs with autocannons.... That is a cheap easy way to put some pressure on your chimeras... 12 x S7 shots each turn should leave your squishy stuff out in the open...

The Chosen in the starter box are nice models but I would recommend purchasing CSM and convert them into squad champions or even IC. (The guy with the maul would make a great dark apostle)

my brother would build a much better 850 list that would give you a run for your money. Seems like the CSM player didn't try/know.

That and I find the game is more balanced at the 1500-1850 points range (maybe one could argue 1k - 2k but at 850, it can easily get one sided).

Berzerkers aren't that bad. You can't rely on them to win games alone, but they aren't bad when used carefully. Hell, contrary to the opinion of the Internet, I've even used them to great success in Rhinos.

Though I do agree that Kharn works better with KCSM than Berzerkers, simply because of his teamkilling tendencies and because they don't need their own Fearless rule when he's with them.
