Ok so my wife and I are GW players but have decided that we need to branch and try another game. We want to do warmachine and hordes and we decided to start with warmachine. The armies we chose are kadldhor for my wife and cygnar for myself. We have gotten the starter boxes for each but can't figure out what else to get. We want to have an even playing field so as one doesn't overpower the other. Any suggestions are appreciated thanks.

Just the starter sets for each is a good place to begin. I'd play with just those until you're sick of it. It'll help from overwhelming you once you start introducing troops.

From there, you'll want to increase the points level to around 25 points, in my opinion. You've got a lot of options in both factions, and there aren't really any bad ones.

Pick up a stormwall and some tempest blazers for yourself, get her to pick up kossite woodsmen, you are set to go.

I'm kidding don't actually do that, do what laughing man said.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

We got the War Room app (for iPad/Android or whatever) and a bunch of the decks. It lets you browse the cards for the different units so you can try to figure out what you'd like to try next.

Other than that, just play a bit and gradually move up the point brackets.

Once you've gotten the basic bits for jack operation down i'd suggest looking at some infantry, Winterguard infantry are considered a staple unit for Khador & as a reasonable balance? Erm... I like trenchers personally but I think long gunners are thought of better. Once you've gotten units sorted i'd say you've got the minimum skillset for knowing what's going on, from there it's more a case of learning what stuff does and how it interacts with other things. I find this game to be more academic then 40k in that regard but have a look at the privateer press forums for ideas (the community is mostly helpful there :-P) & to get a rough feel of what things do battlecollege helps but bear in mind the opinions of the posters are theirs and don't necessarily reflect the wider thinking.

I would suggest perhaps picking up some sort of infantry to boost your games to 15 pts. This lets you get the flow of infantry and jacks' in the game and how they work together.

For Cygnar you should pick up the Black 13th. It is a unit you will use most of the time regardless of what warcasters you are bringing to the table because they are probably the most versatile 4 pt unit in warmachine.

For Khador I would pick up some Winterguard infantry (Leader + 5 grunts) This unit is a staple Khador unit especially when playing pSorscha which is who comes in the battlebox. I would recommend just buying the big 10 man box that comes with the rocketeers and then just leave them on the side for your 15 points battles.

Once youv'e got down those smaller points games, which you will need a few to really get used to the flow of the game because it is completely different than 40k then I would look to expanding from there.

I feel that the balance of the game is good enough that as long as you guys keep using what you feel and what you want it wont be an issue

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

Yeah, balance is pretty good in warmachine. Slight disclaimer, not everything is good together with everything. Chocolate is good, Cheeseburgers are good. Chocolate Cheeseburgers are not good.

Some units don't synergise with each other or a specific caster and Warmachine is all about synergy.

Standard Khador Warning: Many new players seem attracted to Khador because of the 'Jacks. They seem to envision an army of giant red robots stomping it's way through enemy lines. This is with a couple of exceptions, not remotely close to a viable play style for a Khador. Khador's ability to run multiple 'Jacks is narrow at best.

A Jackheavy Khador list is a normal amount of Jacks for other lists. If you want to spam Jacks you play Menoth.

That's a pretty good way of describing it actually, I might steal that line from you for occasional use

If you go with the Cygnar getting the B13 then I would suggest widow makers for Khador. While winter guard infantry are a basis for making a deathstar a minimum unit of them is not avery good choice for the Khador player.

If you are gettting Winterguard you will probably buy the full plastic unit anyway. To which you only need to add Kovnik Joe and the UA to make it a proper WGDS.
