Is the finecast edition of this model really that bad?

If you're not planning on converting (or you can convert metal), buy the metal ones. As a rule of thumb it's okay to buy Finecast as long as you can inspect it first (i.e. inside a store) so you know what you're getting. Or if you're willing to wait until they send you a passable model.
