There really are a lot of different options out there when it comes to mixing this up...and they don't all have to stick with the sleek look of the Tau themselves. Remember, Kroot and Vespid do not use Tau manufactured goods to equip their troops serving for the greater good.
I seem to have gathered that you spend some time in GW stores though...so that might be a concern once you start looking at this sort of thing (and remember - just because the current manager is cool with something, doesn't mean the next manager won't be a dick about it).
Given the existing fluff about high tech worlds existing outside the influence of the Imperium - you could pick up something from the edge of the galaxy that gets pulled in during one of the Tau expansion campaigns...something that had been overlooked by previous crusades or what have you.
Maybe something like the Aurora figures from Victory Force with a unit of the CLAWS in place of a unit of regular Stealth Suits (not sure how the force organization break down changed this version of the codex...I am assuming that Stealth suits are still an Elite choice while Fire Warriors and Kroot are the two primary choices for Troops). The New Eden, Light Infantry or "Grunts" from that line sort of are anime inspired (not quite as far as Infinity is...but on the anime side of the sci-fi spectrum). Several figures to choose from, multiparts and all that.
Hydrissian and to a lesser extent Mephalians from Mega Miniatures (get them while they are hot...Mega is going out of business...I am sure someone will buy the molds, but sometimes it takes a long time before they come back into production) are pretty good alien sci-fi which should work well enough with tau.
If you really want variety - pick up something like a couple of the A7D12 assortments from Zombie Smith and then bash those with Tau parts in order to create the Tau version of Alien Legion.
If you want to get really fluffy - you can do a Hive world (or some other populated Imperial World) that the Tau recently liberated and snag various gangers to count as allied guardsmen armed with various Tau weapons (counts as Lasguns or whatever...).
You also have things like the Valonians from Rebel, AE-Bounty and the various Cobalt figures from Black Hat.
