I play a very fluffy Death Guard/Nurgle army. I want to add a soulgrinder to my list but Im not a fan of the model. Curious how people would feel about a converted Defiler as a soul grinder. The plan is to model the defiler to be broken open with the Daemon coming out and taking it over. I realize fluff wise that is not what a soul grinder is. But I really can't see much difference between a soul grinder and a damon escaping from and taking over a defiler.
Would this be an acceptable conversion or am I likely to run into problems trying to use it?

Sounds awesome, get the weapons right and I can't see any reason why there might be a problem. They're almost the same model after all..

I think it depends on who you play with. I'm usually fine with proxying models especially when a good amount of effort went into it and the models look nice, it's when people use sloppy proxying all over the board that I begin to get upset.
That being said, I'm sure you'll find many other gamers that care very much that models be what they look like.

Yeah, that's the only thing that worries me. But like it was mentioned, they are pretty much identical as far as weapons go. I don't intend to run it as a defiler ever, I have a very nicely done Death Guard Defiler. But is a defiler really a defiler if the daemon is no longer bound to it. And from what i've read a soul grinder is just a daemon fused with machine. The fluff behind soul grinders even starts out with "according to legend" so do we really know where they come from? Would seem to me if a daemon escaped from the defiler and fused with it to become part of it....he would be more grinder than defiler, just not created the way legend says.

Or it's simply a more mechanical looking Soul Grinder. No reason why every Grinder should look identical.

I'm still working out how exactly I plan to do it. It will be very obvious that a daemon has taken control though. I have the extra head from the GUO, i'm thinking it will be coming up out of the top. The right side will probably be some nurgly slime fusing with the autocannon. The left side will be more difficult, I'm no pro modeler. But I would love to have an arm busting out the side holding the damaged remains of the defiler CCW. Maybe even throw in some nurglings crawling out.

As long as it looks the part, and you told me beforehand, I'd be happy to play against it. But, for the record, the Soul Grinder model is way cooler than the Defiler model

This sounds cool, and as long as you've got right weapons on it, I can't see anyone* having a problem with it.
(* Well, anyone with whom you'd want to play with in the first place. There are always anal asshats.)

It would be incredibly close in size(since they are both use the same legs), I can't see a problem with it based on your description.

If anything I don't see a reason why that wouldn't be incredibly fluffy by the old codex at least:
But as lethal as such weapons are, they are mere toys next to the greatest construct of the daemonic smiths - the dread Soul Grinders. These terrifying creatures are the fusion of the most powerful of daemonic entities with machines of war that originate from outside the immaterium, but already have felt the touch of chaos. These are often the wrecked remains of great Daemon engines and other possessed vehicles, like the mighty Battle Titans of the Legio Mortis, or the rampaging Defilers created by the traitor legions.
Fluffwise the reason the models look so similar is that soul grinders are defilers that have been rebuilt by the daemonic hordes themselves. If anything the harder ones to justify with most people are ones where you have a daemon popping out of the top of a land raider with its legs coming from the hatches!

As long as it's about the same size, has the same weapons, etc. It should be fine. A Defiler converted to look a bit more daemonic/with the daemon escaping sounds perfectly fine to me.
